grrr grrr

Two nights at the Mount Rushmore / Hill City KOA comes to $94.82. Are they insane? Kinda why I have yet to stay at one I guess. Most fleabag hotels are less than that...

Happy birthday Ron!

The Bulldog Campground (21120 Pleasant Valley Drive, Sturgis, SD) is $10.00 a night...

Cycle Fish has a nice list of campgrounds.

That's why we started staying in hotels recently. The hotel is about the same price and makes less to carry on the bikes and has TV at night and a shower , sink , and toilet. We have a hotel in Williamsburg with breakfast and a pool for our trip to FL and it's $38 a night. Many state parks offer camping and they are dirt cheap.

Are you looking at Sturgis Rally rates? Of course they inflate them for that.

Geeze.. what happened to the days when KOA was only $10 a night?!? Seems like that was only about... ok... a long time ago (if 20 years is a long time ago).

Ive stayed at this place twice during the ralley. It was very functional, nice showers, bathrooms, easy to find, semi close to everything. during the ralley they served a $5 breakfast that was awesome. some of the tent sites have a plugin and a small tin roof over the picnic table. No trees, a quarter mile of gravel road, close to interstate some noise, I would stay there again but I aint goin there to camp I'd go to ride!

Dang Moe, I'm jealous. That should be an awesome trip.

I just started a new job July 1st, so time off is pretty scarce. My NY Rally route is going to be slabbing it on I-81 most of the way...just get up there, have fun and relax for a couple days (this red-azz ale definitely has me intrigued), and then get back home as quickly as I can. I'd love to be able to just take off on a trip like that...maybe some day.

I 2nd the Dang! Moe. Looks like a cool ride, you are so close to Yellowstone have you considered a day or 2 there?

Problem is, not only is Yellowstone within touching distance, so is Estes Park and well have a gander at this route which would add just over 1,100 miles. Hum. something about bozeman...

Alternate route to Mt. Rushmore.

Will,

I-81 is very scenic. As is US-15 up through Northern PA, especially North of Williamsport up to Painted Post. Not bad for slabs. Not a bad route at all.

The proper way to ride the long way to NY is to take off for at least 2 months instead of 3 weeks! Riding through will have to suffice. Taking a day or half-days in certain areas (four or five in NY ). Riding though Estes Park and Yellowstone should be mighty fine. Slabbing it up to Denver could speed it up but then the point of taking the long way would be mitigated.

Great link Ed! Now back to those thieves at the KOA. Here are my planned overnights on the way up to South Dakota. Nice prices eh? Sure beats the KOA carpet bagger rates.

$20 per night
$13 per night for primitive

Non-electric campsite: $16 per night
Foster Grove Campground has the $16 sites

Gotta say Jim that although the KOA rates might seem a little steep (I don't remember paying $45 a night though) the sites and facilities are a whole lot better than some State parks!!! One state park I stayed at had toilets (restrooms) that even the rats wouldn't go in!!

If you had kept my KOA goldcard going, you would have got 15% discount!!!

Have a good trip.

Moe,
You could save $12.70 and stay at my house instead of a state park in KS. We might even be able to rustle you up some free breakfast.

Hey Shaun!

Lynn and I are going to adorn our hens-teeth shirts tonight and send you a pm!

I wonder if the KOA needs the card or if having two gold KOA pins would suffice!

Moe, if you get a chance Rt 6 (old 6) in PA by me is a great ride can pick it up very close to the NY border and if hungy the Wyalusing hotel serves great food and large portions for not much money. The place to eat is under the hotel in the bar. Nice place and the fancy resturaunt upstairs cooks the food.By the way that is along Rt6.

Late is no problem. I telecommute on Mondays and kind of set my own hours. You'd be in the guest room/office with a computer and could check in with your fans on the BA.com site.

Dog,
Never have ridden much of Rt6. From Mansfield, rode West a bit to the groovy Wellsboro Diner and East to Troy where I rode 14 down to Trout. From Troy, that put me about 35 miles from the Wyalusing Hotel. Thanks for the tip. Being as US15 will be my southern route 53 miles is a bit far for grub! But who knows? Maybe I'll veer off the slab for a ride on the scenic 6 byway! Gonna download the Wyalusing Hotel info to my zumo.

Ade,
A bit optimistic eh? Have you seen the Utah loop link? Might have to pare the route to hit Mt. Rushmore only. But but but idonwanna being as rallies are all about the ride! I will say that a pair of brake pads would make a nice 'furthest traveled' award hint hint...

No problem moe, that can easily be arranged. Show up at the NorEaster and we'll get ya all setup. At least going south to Florida from NY is all downhill according to my maps.

At one point your altered route ran through Bozeman, in which case I was going to make a case for the "Ale House" on east Main. Good food n'/local spirits.

Being an ex-patriot from the Utah nation, I now have to pull that one up on "dialup" and offer kindly suggestions.

Are you driving altered routes or states

hmmmmmmm, the drive north through NE Utah takes you & Lynn across some 9,000+' Pondersoa Pine Mesas, bordering deep, deep canyons'. Great country . Landscapes not entirely unlike parts of the sunshine state. I've only crossed that in a pickup, you might check gas stations, my memory isn't that good.

In BozeZone, MT you'll be a mere stone's throw from the good Friar. It'd be unneighbourly not to stop by for a brief visit. If you know the dates, I could maybee break free myself.

There is also Camptown as in Camptown Races and the safe place where Marie Antonette (or how ever her name was spelled) stayed before she eventually lost her head. There is an over look over looking where her estate was.

John, using the terrain feature of google maps helps lay out routes by allowing me to see topography sortof. NE Utah like Florida? Haha. what part did you mean? Gas stations. Good point. Maybe time for a gallon gan strapped to the sissy bar. The ride north from bozeman is one of those areas that look enticing when in terrain mode. omg. Should my meanderings indeed afford me the Utah twist yous guys will get a call to hoist some pints in the "Ale House" on east Main. being fresh out of Utah, we'll have some chocolate covered grasshoppers to munch on too.

Sept 8th or 9th should be a good bozeman guess'timate.

Sept 8-9 is a Wednesday/Thursday in MT. Recognizing you are two time ozones away, is it the same in Fl?

Late August/early Sept. is my "weekend blitz" time of the year, so a day or two off during the M-F regime would not only be condoned, but encouraged

Day 5 route Starvation State Park UT to Bozeman, MT which is all in Mountain Time Zone. I'll help you with encouragement!

Too bad I don't have a more capable dirt road motorsickle! Bridger-Teton National Forest Scenic Drives.

Looking at all the routes and especially this fifth leg, one would have to say that Sept 8-9 Wednesday/Thursday, leans heavily towards Sept 9 Thursday! Especially being as Old Faithful and Big Sky are on the route!

Uh-oh, had a brain flatulation. Maybe someone could meet Moe with that journal along the way; not that you need the extra headache. It sure wouldn't sit long. You guys can figure if you want to meet him along the way and he can carry it to NY if he chooses. And where it goes from there...? Just a thought from someone who sees the posts of the journal on occasion. Moe, you'll have as many miles on this trip as I have on my bike. My back is killing me just looking at your trip. Ride safe!

Moe,

That's It!! I'm sometimes kinda' loose with proper names I believe the "ale" part refers to a fermented malt beverage containing nominal amounts of alcohol? But Dinqua would know better than this child.

To be consumed only after the scooter keys are safely stashed away.

I have the date penciled in, it's only 300 miles. Could be the good Friar will be interested
