I'm upsizing my front tyre to a 120/90 and I understand that I need to modify my front fender bracket to accomodate the tyre. I know a lot of people have done this, but I couldn't find any examples. It seems like the easiest solution would be to cut the bracket with a band saw to eliminate the entire center portion. Is that a bad idea? Seems like it would also work to just shave down the bracket in the middle with an angle grinder. What have you guys done?

That is exactly what I did with mine, I completely eliminated the center portion of the bracket. No problems whatsoever.

Me too. I cut the center portion of the bracket out with a grinder.

I made up some brackets to raise the fender. Here's the details.

Great. Going to cut out the center in that case. Raising the fender is a good idea too, but I want the low fender look. I was worried about the fender cracking/breaking from road vibrations and fork flex in turns, but it sounds like that's not an issue.

Yeah, slam that fender! Here is how mine turned out with the 120/90, 10000 miles later and no problems with the fender cracking or anything. Those forks wont move between the axle and the lower yoke.

see thats funny cause my fender rubbed a tad when I just cut the center out and didnt raise it. I had a theory that it was just the america fender and not the speedy, but I see roadworthy's got his there....huh?

I never got around to making those brackets and just rode without out it and never looked back

I cut the mounting holes into slots & added a small piece of steel to extend the slot. I'm looking to mod / replace the front fender soon too.

I have the IRC WildFlare 120/90. I guess different manufacturers have varying actual dimensions, even in the same size. Like I said, it's been on for about 10k now, and I have gone fast enough for it to fully expand and it doesn't hit the fender...

Well I just got Dunlop 404s on mine. I mounted the tires last night, but haven't put the front fender back on yet. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Hey Midnight,
I've got D404s on mine but with the speedy fender.
No rubbing, no nothing. I just cut the center out of the bracket, remounted the fender, and off I went.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, the front fender came out awesome and works great! I had Steg von Heintz over at Psycho Cycles carve up the fender itself for a more radical look. I was planning on doing it myself but changed my mind when I found out the fender's plastic. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I think it came out badass.

Here's what I did. Removed the fender bracket:

Painted on some guide lines:

Cut the one piece fender into 2 pieces and rattle canned it with Rustoleum:

Slapped it all back together. Just waiting on my Pacific Blue touch up paint to arrive from back order and it'll be done.

The guy at the tire store said he thought the new tire would make the bike feel sluggish in turns, but I have to say that I like it a lot better.

It is in the center of the forks but not in the center of the wheel because the wheel is off-set due to only one brake.

Hmmmm... I wonder if a removable skewer could be incorporated into the design of that front fender. Then, after a day's riding you'd have a shiskabob made up of delectable and varied insects for dinner. Slap on a little BBQ sauce and I think you'd have something!!
