went to change the H4 bulb on my SM headlight and the retaining plastic bit, where the metal clip fastens to snapped off.(who made that bit so weak on the reflector?) Now can I just get a new reflector to fit to the lens, or do I need to buy a whole new headlight? I went to the dealer and they were Highway robbers in disguise, they say I need the whole assembly at a price of £110.
Is there a replacement part from another maker?
Let me know your suggestions, that don't require chopping apart etc lol, as you can see I must be very heavy handed to break a little plastc bit.

You could go with a sealed beam, or you can buy the H4 lens and reflector assembly from an auto parts store.
I bought one of these and opted for the 100w bulb. The quality isn't the greatest, but I like the light pattern, and its cheap. I'm on my second one, first one lasted about a year and a half.

Edit- That may not be the exact one, the one I got is motorcycle specific. The guy has dozens, just happened onto this one with the parking light feature our bikes come with.

cheers, mine has to have the side lighthole as well. If anyone can recommend a sealed unit that definitely fits, that would be great.

Same clip-snapping-off happened to me too. Got it replaced under warranty. But that's only helpful if your bike is still under warranty.

mine is, but surely as I broke it that isn't a warranty issue?

The tab is really flimsy.

lol, that happened to me yesterday when I changed my headlight bulb for a H4 xenon light I bought at NewSpeedmaster. I thought about posting the same post as you but then I wanted to ride, so I just ripped that metal retainer off and silicone glued the bulb to the reflector. I figured I would get another reflector next time I must change the headlight bulb.

excellent idea, electrical tape is holding mine in at the moment. By the way, it is £110 + vat (£130 then postage). ****** disgusting...

oyh, that's alot of money! I probably will try to remove the old silicone and apply again on a new bulb before cashing out for a new headlight somewhere in the future.

Update: Just got a replacement 7" headlight today. It cost me £40 from ebay and is a genuine Triumph Part, but it is different to the lens/reflector on my bike.
The glass lens is clear and smooth, but the back has a completely different fastening, which is much better than the fragile one on mine.
Here are some photo's, if anyone has this type of headlamp let me know.

Now got to see if it fits...

Is the lens set up for driving on the left or right hand side?

Looks good.

Ok here's my update.
This lens is for driving on the left in the uk & Auz, It fitted a treat.
I went to my local dealer and scouted around the bikes and found this lens comes off a 2009-2011 bonnevile & thruxton range. I don't know why they use different headlight/reflectors to our bikes but for future reference you all know now they fit ours. (also the running light sits a 6 o'clock, not 7-8 o'clock)
I like it for the simple fact the bulb fitment is so much more easy to use without running the gauntlet everytime you need to replace the bulb. Also the clear lens looks really good on the bike.
As an aside, if anyone wants to buy my old lens/reflector, you all know the little plastic clip snapped, but the rest of the headlight is undamaged and good as a cheap alternative if you break the lens etc. if you either tape or glue the bulb in)
If no-one wants it (you must want a left hand dip, comes off a 2010 bike), I will just keep it boxed away, as I will stay now with the clear lens in the future.
