Hi Nick - unfortunately, I don't think you can "get it off"...if I am correct, then what you see is corrosion that has propagated under a coat of lacquer that protects the back wheel. Old Honda (and the "plain" finish HD) engine cases were particulary prone to this - only solution is to remove the lacquer and then polish the marks out and then spray with clear coat or something similar to protect the new surface...

Probably not what you wanted to hear but it's happened to my rear wheel also

Regards

Jan

Hey Nick
The back and front wheel look different anyway so:
1. The finsih may be different, hence one going and not the other.
2. Powder coating the rear wheel in black shouldn't look out of place.

I don't know about Germany, but there are companies that will do this kind of work for you. Cleaned, polished and re-laquered.
They'll get it looking like new again.

Good luck!

In fact, black powder coat might be the way forward for my speedmaster - I've been considering getting my bars, mirrors, faux air filter covers and battery strap de-chromed and then powder coated black - all chrome fasteners are being replaced with S/S finish. The indicators also - I might go with something matt black and a bit smaller. Any thoughts?

Remove 'em altogether!!
A guy I know who rides a H*rley - proper 'old school' type from the 60's - says "take 'em off, you can't forget to put your arm down, can you?"

You have to admit, he's got a point ...

I like my blue bike but, as I mentioned before, I fancy the matt balck paint job!
I think chrome and matt black paint would look the bollocks.
IMO, I think too much matt black though wouldn't look as good.

Hey Nick

I have bar end mirrors fitted and I had to compromise the fitting of 'em because of the threaded bung in the ends of the bars.

How did you fit you indicators? Did you drill out the threaded bungs? Was it a PITA?

Cheers

It was a doddle, removed the end-caps, saw the threaded bungs ,decided better to stop there before i broke something then drove down to my local dealer and let him fit em.
He drilled em out and fitted em no problem, also needed to fit some electrical thingy because otherwise they flash to quickly.
P.S.Whats a Pita?

Thanks Nick
I like the cut of your jib because you obviously adopt the same attitude to stuff as myself when you encounter a problem - let someone else sort it

My brother works at an engineering place so I suppose I could get it done quite easily if I decide to.

In the end I simply used the existing bolt and end cap to 'sandwich' the mirror in place.
Looks OK but not as good as if I'd used the proper expanding bolts with the mirrors.

Don't know if your bike is still in warranty or not, but Triumph has replaced my rear wheel twice now for the same appearance issue you have, and mine was nowhere near that bad - just a bit starting around on the edges of the flange.

Just had it done last Friday morning, and as luck would have it I picked up a nail in the tire on the way to the dealer's. I knew the tire was pretty worn, but not worn out at 12,800 miles. The warranty picked up the labor for the tire change because they had to do it anyway.

Have a Road Hazard warranty on the bike covering the tires, so I'll get reimbursed for the tire, too. As luck would have it.

Nick how long is your warranty out?
Because this degradation has not only just happened!!! its obviously not a NEW problem as I have had three back wheels from Triumph.
I would certainly approach the dealer and a letter with some accompanying photos to the warranty dept. at Hinkley may produce a result.
Just as an aside have you had much other warranty problems if not then use this as part of the arguement i.e. been pleased with overall quality but this happens to be worst "JUST OUT OF WARRANTY"
Or if youve had many claims then use this to lever and add weight i.e. after everything else, this looks worse once its out of warranty!!!
Use the old trading standards quotes like "fit for purpose" Give it a go nothing to loose
Cheers Mike
