After having the America for a short time I did a few long runs on it and as the weeks rolled on found I was suffering more and more with lower back problems. Trip to the doc and a few more tests seems I'm not getting any younger and the seating position on the America is not helping either as all your weight is on yer tailbone,the comfort seat would not have made any difference either as its the actual ergonomic of it being a cruiser thats the problem, no more cruisers for me apparently. So it was with great sadness that I got rid. I now have a guzzi breva which suits me and the wife, its a great bike suitable for touring and it looks ok however I'm saving up for a bonnie, I'm not happy but what can you do  Chhers Jock

Know how you feel, i have a speedmaster and am waiting for an op for a 'cam impingement' on me hip-joint. If the bike still causes pain after will have to change bike style

The seating position doesn't work for everyone but at least you're still running 2 wheels! Happy riding Jock!!

Is a backrest of much help? I was thinking of getting one to help on my sore back.

a backrest is great, but I usually only use mine on long trips

I have the classic blown out lower back disk. I switched to Superbars. Same difference, but they work with stock America risers. Also added a set of mid-pegs. If not for those changes, I would have given up my America along time ago.

Love those Guzzis , great choice in bikes. I am kind of envious I always wanted to add one to my collection but can't swing the cost.

I sympathise with you dude... I have just had to do the same. I have put 1300 miles on my America in 2 months and although it has been fun, I've been plagued by 'tailbone' ache on every ride. It was getting to the point that I would not look forward to my next ride on the bike. The first 30-40 miles would be fine, but then the ache would start to kick in and no amount of shifting around on the seat (gel seat too) had been able to help. After 50-60 miles the pain would get un-bearable and I would have to pull over and walk around. This was not good, as in 3 weeks time I'm off on a little jaunt around northern france putting in around 1500 mile in a week. After reading up about it on the net I have now opted for a different style of bike which takes the pressure of the tailbone. As I originally started riding to do some touring, I looked a the Triumph Tiger and Sprint ST and I have just had a 2010 Sprint ST on demo for two days. Totally different to the America I know, but it has just allowed me to do 200 miles in comfort with no tailbone aches to report. Yep, it puts a little pressure on your wrists and I was at first wondering if this would be its achilles heal, but that has not been an issue on the demo ride. To be honest, I was quite blown away by the ride, it felt so sure footed and confident. The way it gets up to speed ;-) and cruises at motorway speeds gives it great touring potential. Also, after riding 90 miles on the motorway, I peeled off to do the long route home on the twisty roads and it was bloody fantastic fun. I would have looked at the new Sprint GT, but its not out in the UK until August. So, I'm sadly saying bye to the America - a fantastic bike but just not right for me - and I'm picking up my new ST next weekend!

Mid pegs or floor boards. The ergonomics on forward controls is bad for the back as it causes you to slouch and then you take shots to your spine in a slouched position. Pulling your feet back under you allows you to sit straight up and that is what your back needs. Put your feet forward for looking cool in town, pull them back for comfort.

A backrest is wonderful. Have had mine for a couple of years. I have lower back problems for years, and that backrest has helped tremendously. Fast Eddy sells the one I have. In fact, the picture of the one on his site, is my bike. AmyLee

sadly i am begining to wonder this myself having had back problems for a few years and i find when i am out riding i feel i need to stop after 30 - 40 miles for a walk round and if i do 200 in a day it kills,
i have fitted boards and this helped a little but i cant seem to lose the pain in lower back and butt.
i was originally looking for this bike to do me 4- 5 years but i think i might have to have a rethink

Just how I was thinking regarding the bike, but I passed my bike test to do touring so it was the bike that needed changing. Still got a trumpet though!
