I can't believe how hard it is to find a scooter in restorable
condition.
I am looking for something older , cushman or vespa.
I can find overpriced restored models all day , but can't find
a reasonable priced fixer upper.
Just looking for another project but nothing to major.
I just can't find any thing nearby, I have found a few at great
distance.
Is it to much to ask for close and cheap?

Don't laugh. Garage sales. This is one of the last bastions of buying cheap. I look for tools primarily, but have found old bikes and scooters hiding in the garage sometimes.

Last bike swapmeet I went to had no less than 4 Salsbury scooters in assorted conditions for sale. Those were about equal to the Cushman but, some people thought they looked better. Here's something you might want to take a look at, http://www.mmcoa.org/ Not quite a motorcycle, but they don't handle nearly as badly as a scooter.
Years ago, there was a race across the desert and up the side of a mountain in So. CA. One year, it was won by a Mustang, largely because the rider picked it up and ran with it in the desert leg and olaces where the mountain leg ran through muddy areas.
