I've been making my way east thru a half dozen states and I usually note all my gas purchases and mileage for something to do. I was running a steady 44 mpg thru ca, az, nm, and texas. I usually start to look for gas at 125 but I only hit reserve at 150. Suddenly, my first tank of gas from KS ran to reserve in 110 miles delivering a stunning 33mpg! I thought I had to be wrong but the second tankload was almost identical. I'm working on a third tank the on to Iowa.
I think ethanol is pretty 0prevalent now so I dunno...

I live in KS and recently got 30 MPG one way (105 mile trip) and 40 MPG the 105 miles back.
I got around 34 MPG charging around KC.
I use Amoco or Shell.
I also think my bike needs tuned a little more to get better mileage. It's on the to-do list.
What brand fuels are you using? Where have you stopped to refuel? What roads are you taking?

Does Kansas use that 10 or 15% ethanol gas?

Most gas that I've seen is 10% ethanol; shouldn't effect you MPG that much. I routinely hit reserve at 190-205, getting 42-46 mpg. There has been no difference whether I fill up in KS or MO - though MO's gas taxes are 9 cents lower so it tends to be cheaper. I don't see any difference in mileage in the cars either.

...here in massachusetts, gas has "up to" 10% ethanol.....tank to tank in my honda crv I sometimes notice a great difference in gas mileage.....always attributed this to less alcohol.....

Say what, 190-205 wouldn't that be like 75mpg or something? I hit reserve at 140-150 and average in the high 40's.

2008 - bigger tank, without the fuel pump.
195 miles on 4.5 gallons, 43 1/3 MPG.

Thanks J. I came north-east on 54, 50 and the interstates.
I checked again and i was running 40+ mph from oregon thru new mexico and dropped to just under 35 in kansas. If that'ts 10% ethanol wow! I'd rather they left it out and just sold me smaller gallons so i could fit more in my tank.
I think i saw this in ia years ago, i'll check my notes. I wonder if efi vehicles are less affected.

E10 is sold throughout the country, a lot of states require it. There is a good chance most of the gas you bought was E10. Your mileage should drop with it, but it should be about a 2 mpg drop. This is the most balanced article I found on it. I don't think EFI vehicles would be different, but I thought the temperature effect was interesting. Is it possible you were just romping on the throttle harder because, well, you just wanted to get out of Kansas ?

Yes. I don't think it is 10%. Like you said "up to" according to the yellow sticker at the pumps. Based on what I have read it's more like 4 or 5%. It is supposed to be a gradual increase over a few years

The Kansas Flint Hills and mostly the wind.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
