After 35,000 miles, I've been seeing some burned rubber on my left exhaust header. I thought that I had hit a piece of kicked up rubber but today, I smelled fresh rubber again. I looked down and it is my speedometer cable. It's routed down thru a trick NewBonneville Cable holder and I haven't tinkered or changed any thing recently. I pulled it back towards the headlight and ziptied it to the fat wire bundle on the left side of the tank. Hopefully that keeps it from bulging towards that header pipe.
I'm still puzzled as to what suddenly made that cable make contact with the header pipe?

Allright Mr. Smart A$$ Nightrider, so I picked up a few pounds over the winter....<g>
Seriously, I'm about five pounds heavier than last season, I don't think that would make this type of change. I put in Progressive springs (stock height) a few years back and new fluid. I don't think the springs would wear out, but maybe the fluid needs changed? (done at less than 10k, now 35k on the bike)

All joking aside. When I hear complaints from my customers about some failure that "just started happening" I try to quiz them on anything at all that they have adjusted or repaired beforehand. Even if it doesn't seem related. So... What did you do to your bike between everything being OK until this problem? Removed the tank? Adjusted the bars or loosened the controls? There has to be a reason for the sudden change.
I agree that a few extra pounds wouldn't do it...NR

Not a darn thing. For once, the bike needed no work this winter. Weird. A zip-tie did solve the problem. Quote:

Could be something you didn't think you did? Like leaning or resting something near (or on) the bike that would have flexed the cable over the winter. Maybe now that you are riding again the cable is in a different position? Anyway I'm glad that it only took one tie to fix. my bike collected a bunch of gremlins this past winter.
Happy riding...NR
