I'm thinking of putting on a pair of fishtails, from JC Whitney. Here It appears; however, as these are universal right-left pipes, there are no hangers or holes drilled to hang the pipes. I would like to use the stock hangers so my question is: how do you drill into an exhaust, from the side, to mount these? Any input would be appreciated.

Good choice of pipes! You may want to check out Jireh Cycles They have both 30 and 36" long fishtails. They are also less expensive and have good cutomer service. That is where I got mine (mine are the 36" long ones). OK, so on to your questions: Yes, you are correct they are universal right-left pipes, there are no hangers or holes drilled to hang the pipes. What I did to mount mine was put the fishtail pipes on the bike with the exhaust hangers in place. I marked the holes with a sharpie marker. Drilled the holes then used nutserts (threaded rivet inserts) and used those to attach the pipes to the hangers. Harbor freight tools has a pretty inexpensive riviter that does the trick. I think I just used the 1/4-20 inserts.

Just some more info....
I havent ever rejetted after putting on the fishtails. I may be running a bit lean, but the bike runs really well.
They are LOUD. Because of the shape of them, around 4500 rpm, there is kind of a ringing. So, yes, you will need to do something. For me half a package of 0 grade steel wool in each pipe did the trick.
I dont remember what size holes I drilled (it's been a few years). You can take one of the nutserts to determine the size of hole. I do remember I stared with a small pilot hole then went bigger.
I havent noticed the rivets or bolts come loose at all. I did seal the holes with some orange RTV. Just one more thing to clarify, I didnt rivit the hangers to the pipes, I used threaded rivits, they are like adding a threaded hole, so you can use a bolt.

Now that you've had them on for a while, do you still like them? I've always wanted a bike with fishtales and this looks like an inexpensive way to go...

I love mine. I think I've had them on for about five years or so.

Yes, it is. BikerThug, SpeedRacer and I were getting off I-84 (on our way to meet Freedom and a few others in Cascade, ID) and one of Idaho's finest decided he needed to check out my bike, using my loud piped as an excuse.
Yes, they were pretty darn loud back then. I've tamed them down quite a bit the old fashioned way with steeel wool.

He let me go without giving me a ticket. He did walk around the bike a couple times to check it out and gave me a lecture on how loud it was and how dead silent his BMW was.

I have a baffle in the end (near the fishtail) then I used four pads of 000 steel wool in each side. They sound much better now.
