How about making a wiring sub-harness consisting of a male plug on one end and a female plug on the other so we could re-position the CDI under the saddle or where the consensus of opinions prefers.

exactly Keith. A lot of other members have eluded to this for years now. I cranked a web based e-mail to procom c/o Wesley asking the same thing of his company. Seems to me that procom engineering has everything sourced already, i.e., Extension cord ends and such.

Maybe somethin' like Item No.3 on the "Battery Tender" website, Moe? http://www.storemax1.com/index.php?k=bat...&OVNDID=ND1
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

If what you linked to was what I think it was? Huh? Then no. It would be a subharness. One that would allow the oem harness to plug into it and the other side would plug into the CDI. Sort of like this usb extension. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q...&sa=title#p

The proposed sub-harness would extend the oem plug location is all. The proposed sub-harness would receive the existing oem cdi plug and a distance further, would plug into the relocated cdi. Like Keith said:An Extension cord.

Heck Dwight, maybe a potential vendor would go ahead and manufacture the complete
CDI Relocation Kit!
Containing: a new sub-harness a new CDI backing plate/bracket and finally some basic directions on how/where to install it.

Heck yes!!! I was planning to cut and solder, but a ready made harness would be great.

Excellent idea. Granted you would need to have good soldering skills and would need to seal each connection but in the end, you would have an extension cord.

I would want to believe that a matching wire gauge would be important too, especially as weak, dainty and frail as the Gill units are. Wouldn't want to pi-- off the little gremlins inside.

This ain't gonna happen it seems. Unless it is an individual thing. Procom is not interested in making any. And no Vendors have chimed in.
Maybe we should poll the demand?

Identify the connectors and I will happily manufacture a prototype.

Has anybody done an autopsy on a failed unit and definitively determined that the CDI failures have been as a result of heat?

I started to have at it with a miter saw and an old blade, but it seems the entire unit is epoxy sealed, and so I gave up on the project.
Procom's web site used to show the proper CDI connector type on a non-Triumph parts page. Since I saw it, they have changed the site quite a bit, and I couldn't find it a few minutes ago. The connector we seek is made by AMP (AKA Tyco, who bought AMP Special Industries a number of years prior to Tyco's crapping of the financial bed) I pawed through Amp's online catalog, but couldn't find the exact model.
If we could get an Amp part number or model name from Procom...

Not to my knowledge, but like I said heat is the enemy of electronics. In the early days of electronic ignition in autos the control module was placed in the engine compartment with no shielding or insulation. Failure was very common; in fact when I was a Ford mechanic I would advise anyone who cared to listen to carry a spare module in their car so they could replace it if it failed in an inconvienient loctaion (don't they always ? )
Therefore, seeing the location of these igniters with no shielding of any kind leads me to believe that heat could be a factor in the seeming large number of igniter failures for these bikes.
So, while there is no proof that modular warming is a factor, there is compelling evidence for the theory.

My mistake - it was Gill's page where I saw the connector http://www.gill.co.uk/products/data/EngineControlsPDF/GS4V2.pdfI believe it to be called an Amp "Econoseal 18 way connector" I struck out at Amp's site trying to find it. Maybe a phone call to them or Procom would do it? I'm out the door to try and cram 2 weeks of work into... a smaller time increment.

Thanks for all the juice you're putting into this Jim, including the market research polls in the Accessories forum! I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates it.

Finding the male end of the connector is a bit more difficult than I'd imagined and I think I'll have to visit an Amp vendor to see what's up. At this point it would seem, after reading a ream of PDFs, that the female is a cable mount and the male is a circuit board hard mount...that might make for an interestingly creative adaptation for an extension cable. Gotta talk to a rep and dig deeper.

When it comes to wiring the desired jumper cable, I wonder how many of the connections are actually required? I would doubt it needs all 18... but I dunno

By the manual schematic not every pin is used: Still, you'd have to have at least the proper shell to make the connections and that is going to necessitate access to AMP's 18 pin connector. So far it seems that the Econoseal 18 is manufactured expressly for transportation electronics with the male end being a hard board mounted wire up...we just can't see that end due to the epoxy filler. Also, I haven't been under my tank to look but I don't remember the "seal" part of the Econoseal being installed on the harness mount female and I'm curious about that.

I went to see my not-so-local Tyco/Amp dealer, Randolph and Rice in Nashville, and they were clueless. Didn't even recognize the connector and their current Amp parts book did not have it listed under the Econoseal line. I've hit a dead end.

I've just had a reply from Gill. They confirmed that it's an AMP Econoseal connector and they only use the PCB mounting connector. They can't supply me as they have a minimum order policy - so again it's back to the drawing board

And that's the rub, after hours of pouring over PDF files from Amp I haven't found one cable mount male connector. That leads me to believe that it isn't offered and that they manufacture the PCB end for the ignition module builders and the cable (harness) mount female for the wiring harness builders.

True enough but a jumper harness sure would be sweet, then you could futz around with the final location,

Yep, doesn't appear to be an option though. Ya know Ed, if you can find the connectors, you could build the cables and sell them. I'd buy one. If I haven't already modified it that is. Once I get the full use of my right arm back I plan on getting a ProCom unit and relocating the mounting.

I'm going to try some retailers in the UK - I'll let you know how I get on. I was thinking it may be better to go with the PCB connector anyway - that way I could fix it where the CDI currently sits so it won't be floating about and it would give a more positive location than cable ties
