I can't seem to use the search engine very well. I always get everything I don't want. I'm tired now so I'm just going to ask for advice.

I'm trying to take the front wheel off to have the tire replaced. The manual says to unscrew the front axel nut with a hex key, but it doesn't seem to give a size. Nothing in my tool box fits. Anyone know what size the hex key is or any substitute tool?

thanks in advance.

12mm is what you need.
It also says you need a 19mm but if you loosen the 12mm side before you loosen the 19mm side youll be fine.

If you do need a 19mm (I did), it's 3/4". Make your own tool by putting some nuts on a short 1/2" bolt with some loctite and tighten the bejees out of it. You can then use it with a 3/4" wrench or socket.

You can use a 5/8" sparkplug socket on one side, flip it around so the hex end fits in the socket. A 12 mm hex key is needed for the other end.

thanks all. I found a 12mm and got the axel nut off, then used a socket and drove the axel out pretty easily.

Iwas told to just turn around a 3/4" bolt stick the head in the axel , perviously lok-titng two 3/4 " nuts against each other at the other end of the bolt. And personally don't feel bad.--cbeacher. I NEVER get what i need out of that search box. for the same reason.

Wouldn't hurt to familiarize yourself with the tech vault. Theres a ton of great info in there.
After I did that I learned to save posts to my profile for quick access as needed.
After I did that I learned how to better use the search function.

I have a pair of bent bolts I use. I found one that the head of the bolt fit each size then heated them end bent them.

That's a good idea Ian

I'm a bit anal about torque specs though so I like to be able to get a socket on it.

Yeah, I can "feel" the torque really well and get very close, it's just a stickler thing.

There's a picture here somewhere, but when I search for it, I get every post ever entered by every member.

Get a 5/8 sparkplug socket, insert a 3/8 extension through the wrong way, pop it in place, the hex end will fit in the axle, a 3/8 torque wrench on the other end.

don't forget the extension changes the torque, I have a formula here somewhere for that but don't feel like looking. Good idea though.
