Rights are no longer granted per say. We must fight for them. Every day. Blink and you will wear a helmet. Blink and you will wear an orange vest. Blink and you will have a cat can on your bike. Blink and you will not be able to mod your bike in any way! Get just a little involved in biker rights and you will be able to blink with some promise that tomorrow will be a little better. Just my 2 cents worth! 6 year ABATE member

Also, do a web search for modified motorcycle association. They are very active in preserving your rights. Here is an online petition for CA residents http://www.petitiononline.com/SB969CA/petition.html and a similar one for non-residents. http://new.petitiononline.com/SB969US/petition.html

Great thought. I signed because I truly enjoy the Florida law that allows me to ride sans helmet whenever I would like to. As citizens, we do simply sit back and expect someone else or a PAC to stick up for us and our rights. Many special interest groups have vastly different views from ours and if they are more vocal, laws do change. Power to the People Greybeard!!

Technically, I can't even roll the bikes out to the street before going on a ride without a lid. I think they should start applying product liability to legislation so the pople can sue the pants off the politicians when they pass some stupid law.

you are correct privi as an active member of a back patch club for over 18 years retired now we always have to fight for our right to ride what we feel is like the problem is we do need some type of safty laws for those who are not aware of how to customize there rides safely i new a bloke who hard tailed a GPZ500 ninja the front wheel was two inches of the back wheel the thing rode like a crab sidewards the problem is to many laws but we do need laws for brakes lights and proper engineering not cowboy builders like we get in some back street workshops

That would be nice but politicians have exempted themselves, and most others government types, from any liability for their actions. If they were as liable as private citizens making the same decisions they would act with a lot more discretion. (Parole boards come to mind) On the other hand, in our incredibly litigious society do we really need to feed more to the trial lawyers? If you really want a politicians attention get a bunch of people to send him letters or emails demanding the action you want to see and support his opponent if you need to. Threaten his job and you'll get his attention.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Now that my beard is cut a bit shorter, I'm riding a Triumph and I try to avoid certain areas, I don't get as much hassle. But, for a long time it seemed at least once a day I'd get the old " Zo kamerad, led me zee yor bapers" routine. There used to be a place in Hollywood where 3 or 4 MC clubs used to meet. The local police were so down on motorcycles that one particular cop used to crawl from bike to bike with his flashlight to make sure everyone was parked tight against the kerb. Once, someone stole the car parked just in front of his while he was doing that.

I joined the AMA shortly after I bought my bike. I will continue to be a member.
I also joined ABATE of PA. They are doing some positive things in Pa. for rider's rights, but I'm having some problems with some of their political agenda. Not to mention their Harley-centric attitude....
I will stand up for biker's rights as I can, but I won't support crooked politicians to achieve it.

More fun!

I know that stuff goes on, but I've never run into it in the rural areas of the West. Our UnderSheriff is getting a restored Norton Commando back on the road, one of the deputys has an old HD, a former Border patrolman from north of me rides a tricked out HD bobber and is a member of the Iron Pigs. Long time ago I was working the entrance gate in Canyonlands-Needles Dist. and some kind of patched club came through from a 4-Corners rally. While we were visiting & talking landscape I noticed one was wearing a .45 pistol. Now I'm no tough guy in any sense, but just asked him to remove the clip and store it away, "Makes the other visitors nervous". Always practice the Golden Rule .
