I was wondering what the highway performance on the stock America/Speedmaster was like. Is there plenty of throttle to break away from other traffic. I'm a couple of months away from purchasing my 09 Speedmaster but the dealer isn't close enough to a Highway to test it. Thanks, Redbeard.

I ride mine to work quite a bit through some pretty heavy traffic.I have never felt underpowered when I needed to creat distance. They arent a sport bike by any means but many of us feel they are pretty snappy, especially in the 40-70 mph range that is needed for traffic riding. After 70 mph mine is not very throttle responsive ,up to that it is very quick.

Have to agree with smaug. I can get out of my own way if needed and it cruises like a dream. You'll love it, I'm sure.

Not at all.. I'm about the same size/weight and I can do a ton up on the interstate without problem.. more than enough 'umph' to get you out of trouble when needed.

PaulLoader thanks for that. I watched that entire vid.Glad to here that this is a responsive bike at highway speeds. My frame and size is why I chose this bike. Felt real good at the test ride compared to the Sportster 1200. Not to mention these things are just strait up gorgeous!

Up to around 90 MPH, performance is the equal to standard road bikes with engines up to twice the displacement. above 95, my America tends to flatten out and tops out around 115. So, with any semblance of normal riding, you will have no problems.

Welcome, Redbeard!
A lot of us on the site are Big & Tall store customers...don't recall any complaints about a lack of acceleration with normal riding.

Riding 2-up with over 300 lbs. total I have no trouble going 70-80 on the highway or faster. Of course, I do have bit more power than stock. A stock bike still should have no problem on the highway. I think they ride great on the highway.
For better highway comfort I added pull back risers and on long highway trips I use my backrest bag mounted where my wife usually rides.

Don't worry Dan. I'm only a few lbs less and normally cruse at 80. So unless you're h#ll-bent on running from the law, you'll be fine.
Not too many mountains to climb in Florida either.

+1 I had no problems back in my 790 days either with highway cruising 2 up

The same here, even when two up with my daughter and some luggage, at a guess I'd say a combined wheight of around 280lb (although I don't push the ton)
And I just love blatting it uphill cos there is hardly any difference

thank you so much guys! I'm sure happy to hear it. Down here in Florida if you can't peal away from the cars and semis here you WILL find yourself in trouble. I had enough time to take the sportster out on the I4 and it had plenty of go, especially now that they have 5 gears compared to my 4 geared Ironhead, and that motor is so tired I try not to take on the supper slab too much. It does fine but I know it's on its last leg "again". this guy Merl that I met a year ago bought a used 05 or 06 Spedmaster and I fell in love with the looks right away. So of course I had to go to the dealership and check it out. In traffic on the city roads, great bike, and you guys are right on about the acceleration. I have no problems leaving traffic behind at stop lights. That was 14 months ago. I've been saving just for this bike ever since!

redbeard, I'm shorter and heavier, and have had no problems with highway performance on the America. Plenty of power to keep up, and to get out of trouble spots.
