I had the good fortune to go and see a cracking Thin Lizzy tribute band called Limehouse Lizzy the other night with some friends. We also went to see an excellent ACDC tribute band called Livewire also a couple of weeks earlier. Now I love going to concerts and stuff and its always great to see the original bands (unfortunately not Thin Lizzy anymore) but in these days of tickets to major concerts being snapped up in minutes and some quite outrageous ticket prices I think some of these bands make for a cracking night out at a reasonable price. Rip off or valid performers? Anyhow some gratuitous rock music for you (both clips are not the concerts I went to). In some ways tribute bands are better than the originals as they are less inclined to play about with the songs, which can be downright annoying at times And as for the cost? enough said

Any one ever seen the Metalocolypse episode where they become their own tribute band?....haha
Anyhow, whats the point really? I'd take a cd playing in a decent sound system over a sweaty dude in makeup playing rockstar for 60 minutes.

Limehouse Lizzy played at the place that used to be my local in Crewe... the Limelight. That place had some great tribute bands on.
I've spent a fortune seeing some bands in the past...they seem that they only do it for the money. Most of the tributes I've seem do it for the love of the band they are mimicking.

Here in the States, Beatle tribute bands are fairly popular (though not as common as Elvis impersonaters!) Right here in the Midwest, in Branson Missouri, there is an excellant Beatle look alike/sound alike band called Liverpool Legends. George Harrison's oldest sister put them together. I saw then just down the road, cause they do a little bit of touring to try out "new" material and help some local charities. Honestly, the next best thing to the real thing. They phisically look like them, imitate the original's manerisms, ("John" even continously chews gum) and sound excellent, playing, in full costume, the early period, the Seargent Pepper period and the later stuff. But now I'm curious, do you genuine English gents have the same sort of thing over there?

We have a band called "Frontiers" that does an excellent job doing Journey songs...They put alot of pride in what they do, and the guitarist is phenomenal...Every July 4th in Kennesaw Georgia...worth the trip...

A friend was telling me about a Queen tribute band he saw. A Queen tribute band? How is that even possible... I mean how could anyone even come close to Freddie Mercury in talent and raw stage presence. What a performer!!!!!!
Friend said the tribute band was really good! That impresses me!!

totally agree Graham, another good ACDC band is Hells bells who regularly do the Bulldog. The good thing is its basically a Greatest Hits Concert which is great if you dont know the bands that well. Most genuine concerts nowadays are just promoting the latest album (sorry must get into the 21st. Century: CD, Download etc) and unless your a devoted follower you dont know the songs. As for the comments about the tributes not being as good as the originals, you want to hear some of these guys sing and play. They are really good. Noone can be as good as the Flames at Gaydon though, get up and dance you funky Stretchermonkey!
All the best
Chris

What a grover Funky 'Monkey, worth paying to see them silky moves again!
Thanks for the heads up. Have a couple of places in York (Fibbers & the Dutchess) like to see reformed groups (Buzzc*cks, Stiff Little Fingers, Nine Below Zero etc) or some new stuff like Rupa and the April Fishes (seen recently - outstanding).
Love live music - if only I could move like the Funky 'monkey!

it took the Counting Crows Tribute Band to well never mind. the Counting Crows tribute band is more something out of Western Virgina. Huh? Think of Ricky Skaggs without vocals or the shotgun...

One of the more interesting tribute bands is Dread Zeppelin. They do Led Zeppelin songs with a raggae beat, and the lead singer thinks he is Elvis. Rober Plant considers Dread Zeppelin his favorite tribute band....... Tom

To be fair, Limehouse Lizzy were actually better than Thin Lizzy when I saw them many moons ago. One of the guitarists for them actually was a guitar technician for Brian Robertson I think.
Theres another band, although not strictly a tribute band, I'm off to see in the near future called Hayseed Dixie, and I know a few people on this site know of them very well. Now they are something else. They kinda started doing Kiss and ACDC covers in a bluegrass style but could easily do a gig just using their own material and also the singer Barley Scotch does ride a rocket 3.
As to being a funkey monkey Chris and Ivan, alas all I did at Gaydon was miscalculate how strong that slaughterhouse ale actually was. Mind you there was a fair few people strutting their stuff that night....Ivan, Jane, Keith,Dave Hedgehog, blimey I think that even Gina was dancing as well!

I'm a pretty big Pink Floyd Fan. Last night, a buddy and I saw "The Pink Floyd Experience" in Shippensburg PA. http://www.thepinkfloydexperience.net/They were pretty good, but added some dramatic flair to most songs. The bass player and drummer were incredible. They have a sax player and seemed to add a sax solo to every song, which was a bit too much at times. They did a 7 minute capsule of "Echoes" that was neat. "Eugene", with a monstser bass solo was the highlight. Last year we saw "Several Species", which is a huge ensemble band. They do the big production pieces, like from "The Wall" very well. http://www.severalspecies.com/My favorite is "The Machine". A true four piece band that plays every Pink Floyd song flawlessly, including Echoes. They have a very cool laser light show as well. http://www.themachinelive.com/All three go deep enough into the Pink Floyd to satisfy the most hard-core fans, but "The Machine" is my favorite.

I've seen them on TV. In the show I saw, they changed up some of the songs, which I'm don't really care for. But, if they came to this area, I'd certainly get a ticket. Quote:
