Has anyone taken the starter solenoid apart? I've been having trouble and I was pretty sure this was it. I took it apart and the plunger is sitting at an angle. it doesn't move up or down equally. Just curious if anyone else has done this. Also when I jumped the solenoid it cranked over just fine.
Thanks!

My problem was also the fuse, $6 at my local Trik-Trucks. Starting was intermittent, completely resolved with the new fuse.
I discovered this of course after buying a new starter solenoid....

OK thanks guys , but has anyone taken one apart?
How should it operate? I know the plunger moves up and down
but this one is sitting cockeyed in the housing.

Yeah, Dave. Ain't technology great. Well, if it ain't great at least it is reason to display my uncanny and unorthodox manner of abrieviating in order to avoid those tiny little keys.

Back to the question at hand - Has anyone taken one apart? Not I. In my 40+ years of driving or operation a motorized vehicle, I may have experienced 1 - maybe 2 solinoid failures. Never thought to do anything but replace one or hit it with a hammer.

Solenoid's don't really fail. I know Tirumph has been using the same part numbers for years ( 30+ at least )

nope, if anyone has taken the time to take one apart I'd like to know. As far as solving my problems thanks for the help, but I haven't even given the symptoms yet. I've ordered a new part since I pretty much did this one in taking it apart!!! As far as diagnosing the issue, I hope the new part will do it, but if not I'll be sure to try all of the different fixes I've gotten for it!

Nope, never took a Triumph one apart but numerous others. As long as contact is made between the main contacts, things happen.

Speaking of symptoms, what was the problem? No start at all times or when certain conditions were met? That could be caused by any number of items already mentioned. The check for the solenoid is to apply power to the control lead to get the plunger to move. I think you said yours worked when you jumpered it. Leads me to believe you could have a problem with something other than the solenoid.
1. starter button
2. starter relay
3. clutch switch
4. neutral switch
5. sidestand switch
6. fuses
7. kill switch
8. wiring

When I bought my not-really-needed solenoid, the counter guy at Hermey's said he didn't recall ever selling on for any new Bonneville. I should have heeded that advice instead of blindly replacing it.....

The problem is intermitent. I put a fully charged battery in, 13.2V and it just made a slight click. I tapped the solenoid with a screw driver, hit the button and it worked. Next day checked the battery , hit the switch and click. I cursed it, walked away, and 1/2 hour later it worked fine. It either works or I get a slight click. I broke the old solenoid taking it apart. So a new part is on the way. I'm guessing that all the switches are good because "something " happens when I hit the starter button. So, if the solenoid isn't it I wil go to the list of fixes.
WHen I jumped it, I bypassed it, battery to starter and it cranked fine. I appreciate all of your advice!

that sure sounds like the same symptoms as my bad fuse gave me.

Unless the fuse is loose or corroded in it's holder, I can't see how it would give an intermittant contact. The fuse is either good or bad!

Try the solenoid and if the new one doesn't work you'll have to check each item directly.

Poor choice of words - it was the starter relay. Under the tank. Here's the whole thread of my experience.
This could also be called the "headlight relay", as this relay has a lead to the headlight, that cuts power to it during startup to reduce the load on the battery. That extra pole on the relay means it's not as common as four-pole relays which can be found in any autoparts store.

`OK , I found that. Still waiting for the solenoid to show up. If I connect the battery, key on, and hit the start button, head light goes out, does that mean the relay is working properly or possibly not?
thanks gain

No, my headlight would cut out but the bike would still not fire. Someone local should have that relay. I got mine from an aftermarket truck place (Trick Trucks).

Good deal, warm weather is just around the corner (snowing out of my hotel room window in NY currently....).
