You could spend the $25 and get the kit from new speedmaster which incudes directions. Alternatively you could probably just buy the correct size bolt to plug the hole left when you remove it and get free advice here. I did this a while ago (bought the kit) and can't remember all the details. I'm sure someone else will chime in and explain the procedure. You do know that the tubes next to the spark plugs and the canister (under the tank) they connect to (not the coils or ignition module) are the AI system? Basically the tubes next to the plugs come off and there is a bolt underneath (next to the spark plug) that has to be replaced.

The easiest way is to put a marble or ball bearing into each of the rubber connecting hoses after the 90 deg bend. There is a clamp that you can easily undo with your fingers, pull the hose off stick the marble in push the hose back on replace the clamp and enjoy the silence. Here is a link with some pictures. http://www.triumphrat.net/twins-technical-talk/116582-easy-ai-disabling.html

The best bet is to buy one of the kits that includes the correct bolts and plug for the air box,the kit also comes with good instructions to do the job cleanly and easily.I used the one from new bonn.I didnt notice any improvement in less popping or any other thing for that matter but it does make for a cleaner look and the plugs are easier to get to.

Lou,
I'm assuming your bike is equipped with EFI. Removing the AI on EFI bikes might cause a minor problem with the mixture. The O2 sensors don't see the extra air in the exhaust from the emission device and assume you are running rich. You might need a remap but some of the other fellows with EFI might want to chime in on what they have found.
I know on the carb models it is a straight pull with no changes to the mixture settings.

The O2 sensors only operate in closed loop mode (closed or nearly closed throttle) so they won't have much influence on running rich or lean except during closed throttle. So you can remove the AI and leave the O2 sensors operating (but the leaner mixture they ask the ECM for during closed throttle won't actually be delivered because the AI is removed). The worst that can happen is that you run rich during closed throttle - or more correctly have more unburnt mixture in your headers during closed throttle.
IMPORTANT: If you have CATs in your headers it is not recommended that you remove the AI because there is some fear they may melt without the AI. Australian bikes and most USA bikes DON'T have CATs in their headers but it is thought that LA bikes and maybe European bikes may have two pairs of CATs - one pair in the silencers and one pair in the headers. The bikes that DON'T have CATs in the headers have them in the stock silencers (mufflers).
Removing/blocking the AI will reduce the popping. You can also turn off (disable) the O2 sensors by using Tuneboy. This will entirely eliminate the popping and also improve the snatchy throttle of EFI bikes. The AI solenoid can be left intact and electrically connected on the bike with the AI removed. If left on the bike it will produce loud clicks as it tries to pump air in the non-existant AI. It can be removed by replacing it with a 10watt 50ohm resistor. This will eliminate the annoying clicking and the ECM will not throw a warning light because it sees the resistor and thinks the solenoid is still attached.
Hope this helps.

Foglefar has it nailed. The O2 sensors only work to adjust mixture at 0 to 1/8th throttle. Beyond that it just uses the maps in the ECU. By default these bike run lean to help them meet the strict emissions laws. I'm working on an easy way to use the stock O2 sensors to measure the A/F ratio. Just need some decent weather so I can test my theory.

OT sorry. Hey Rob do you have a pic of your T-bars on the bike?

Lou, Are you still looking for directions on removing the AI? I just pulled mine today (carb model) and it was a piece of cake, more or less. Yes, I used the kit from NewSpeedmaster.
