I got a friend over here who has this black tank with some checkered flag pattern on each side.
He told me this was from a special edition America, but I haven't seen any pictures on this site of that, so I was wondering if he was kidding me or not...

Didn't Triumph have an optional tank available that had a checkered theme?

You could also get dual Union Jacks, dual American flags, or dual Ghost Flames with matching front mudguards. They're in the 2003 Accessory Catalog - might have been available other years as well.
More flags
More fun!

From 02-04 Triumph had a couple optional Tank/Fender sets. There was a flame set, a set with Brit flag on one side, US flag on the other and a chekerboard set. The checkerboards were in the area of the traditional swoosh sides. Actually they were more like a racing finish line checkered flag rather than just checkers.

Ok, found it! or them should I say... Seeing it up close, they are actually stickers with the clear coat over. The tanks can be seen here (among other accessories at the time, scroll down): http://www.hermys.com/triumph/america/2004/

Yep, that was a custom paint kit from the factory. The one in Roadworthy's post is not.

Got to see him today, here's his bike: PS. He's a funny guy, just wants to try all the bikes available, and since he own a bike shop, he gets to buy and resale his bikes all the time... He went from Kawasaki Zephyr, then a Z1000, Ducati Monster and Hypermotard and now, he's got a Triumph!

Yes, BT did. He had a yellow and black '04 Speedy. The checkerboard was black and white checker decals.
