Having just completed swapping my indicators out for smaller ones I can assure you it’s not hard at all. There are many types and styles to choose from and the rear fender is steel and should give a good mounting for the new lights. You may have to swap out the flasher unit for an electronic one depending on the light you select. I bought locally a Bosch P122 and it works fine. It was a 2 pin rather than a 3pin like the OEM part. No problem really. I simply swapped the wires leading into the flasher holder. Remember to waterproof the connections as they will get a fair amount of water thrown from the rear tyre in the wet.

I am interested in mounting them thru the chrome rear fender struts, using the existing fender mounting holes.
Anyone done this and what did you use?
Pics?

Ya know Bill... I think that would enhance that already good looking rear end our bikes have. I can't do it due to the bags I'm putting on but I sure like the idea!!! I too look forward to pics if anybody has 'em.

Pretty sure you can do it with kuryakyn silver bullets, just order the ones with hollow mounting bolts and get the right diameter. Then you just have to do the wiring. Something like THIS may work. Make sure the diameter of the mounting bolt is the same.

Using original signals and some threaded rod, hollowed on a centre lathe...

Thanks, There are some more pics here somewhere.

No, But the fender on it is a hand made glass one, I still have the original fender in one piece. The thread in the frame is an M10x1.25mm pitch. A piece of rod hollowed out, a half nut to lock it all off, and some strategic cutting got me the desired positions. Be careful if you take the stalks off the original indicators, they're threadlocked (M10x1.25) in and you wouldn't want to damage the chrome bowl.
