I'm considering a replacement speedo for the faulty one I have. It can be mechanical or electronic, but I'm leaning toward electronic 'cause it may include other features such as tach, temp, time etc. I want something pretty for my girl and so I ask... has anyone come across a replacement speedo that looks good on our bikes? Been through the archives, searching the net of course... Still looking.

Dakota's are a fine look for the modern age. Money no object? Traditional looks a must? Motogadget makes a traditional looking multi function clock that's just killer. http://www.motogadget.com/en/frameset.html?gclid=CMH73N-7x58CFSXEsgodFRON1A

I would like to find something with the lights built in as I'm ditching the console. That gauge is sweet but 400 something bones? No thanks.

That's why I prefaced it with 'Money no object?'...besides, I'll bet a straight replacement from the dealer is right up there.

If your'e going for cheap, check out this one from Drag Specialties. I have the tach, works OK. Fogs up in the wet, hasn't seemed to do it any harm. I saw a standard Bonneville with that speedo and their matching tach side-by-side, looked pretty good. The ratio is 2240:60.
EDIT: Looking at the description again, I don't think the correct ratio comes in KPH. The speedo would still work, but the odometer would register miles instead of kilometers.

Thanks Dave!! How the heck did I miss that one... I just checked Ebay this morning. I'll bid on that for sure but I also ordered a full instrument, digital, new age thingy with everything I guy would want and more. Speedo, tach, elapsed time, idiot lights, fuel gauge and more. It is the BEST value I could find for such an item. Check it out here. I ordered the 2853 which comes with a chrome housing. Hmmm, might end up with both then I'll have to decide. Tricky stuff.

No. Not sure I'm going to use it as my primary instrumentation. Leaning towards some mini-gauges (analog). J&P has a speedo with the indicator lights in it. I may still use the Veypor for it's performance monitoring features some day.

No, the one I got was $149 because I HAD to have chrome don't you know, and the only model with a chrome housing was a buck 49. Still pretty darn good though and the best value out there from what I can see.

That's the one (or similar to the one) I'm looking at. Plus the matching tach. Did you mount the tach in your dash or on a P-clamp?

Yes, but not in the way that we think. They said they needed a picture of where the speedo cable goes into the front hub and they could match up an analog-digital conversion thingy. But, but my bike ain't here and I kinda thought I'd like to get rid of that cable if I could anyway. So I'm gonna try the magnetic pickup that comes with the gauge. Guess I'll have to come up with a plug for where the cable attaches.

I'll be interested in where you put the magnet and pickup keith. I ended up on the swing arm and rear sprocket because I was afraid of f'ing up my brake disk.

Yeah, I'll let you know Bill. Thy guy said the magnet and pickup should be 8-10 mm apart.
Hey Dave... I found that cable that replaces the stock speedo cable. It's used instead of the magnet method.
You can read about it here.

Very nice Keith. I'd be very interested in finding out how you go with this
Staintune Pipes, K&N Pods, 45 pilots, TBS needles and 145 mains.

Dang, I was hoping you'd go for the bank breaking Motogadget so I could see that object of pure technical sex at work.

I also like your selection too Keith. Having looked at the models from the link you supplied, my preference would have been what you picked. I did want to mention though that as electrics etc is not my strong point, (actually I don't have any anyway) ,may I ask you whether it would be possible for you too provide instructional support and perhaps pics in how to fit the unit? It's just that you are doing all the research etc and me being in the dark as to how it'll be actually done, it would be a shame for me as a doombie if the instructions weren't made just a little bit simpler this way. In other words I'm a sort of "monkey see, monkey do" type of fellah so pics as you install the unit yourself with explanations would be such a great help. Apologies for making this appear bigger than Ben Hur but you really would be helping me and perhaps many others out here achieve what has the potential to be a brilliant change to our bikes. Whatever, thanks for taking up the challenge and good luck. staffo

I don't know if this will help what your looking for, but its a 60mm guage from Mikes XS S/S case, and reads correctly, they also sell them with the idiot lights inside cost was $45 the mounting cup is a Harley part though, the cable is extended using a XS yamaha 6" Tacho cable extension, cost if I remember is about $8, so all up less than $100, same colour face as the standard Tacho and reads correctly, they also do both a Tacho and a speedo in black also.

For me to provide technical support... especially in this forum with so many gurus is a bit like playing at my first piano recital after a bunch of seasoned pianists. But I'd put together a pictorial ('cause ya know I love pictures) and try to explain all the steps along the way. Actually kinda looking forward to it. I'm gonna use as many of those idiot lights as I can as an alternative to the stock ones. But it would be my pleasure to do what I can to advance the race so to speak. Or... how about something more universal, "You betcha!"
