In my other thread about muffler packing, stevew replied with something that had me very excited.....making a reducer to put in the pipe where the muffler and header meet. I've been anxiously awaiting his reply to the questions i posted back, but when i checked his profile i see he reistered almost a year ago and only has 5 posts. So i'm afraid i won't be getting a answer. Hopefully one of you will know.

Anyway he said the reducer really made his thunderbike pipes sound great and quieter. But i need to know exactly how to make them.

1)-how long should they be
2)-i assume the small end faces towards the back of the bike, correct?
3)-he said the small end was 30 mm. I think thats around just over an inch. Does that sound right or how small would you suggest
4)-the pic below i found in a google search and i assume this is what they'd look like. But how would you go about making them? I'm thinking a piece of thin metal tubing, slit it from about 1/2 way down then bend it into a cone. Gotta be a easier way tho.

IKJ,
go to any Midas shop and they can make them up for you. Any muffler shop has pipe benders/stretchers/expanders. I had two made and they cost me $10. Bring the parts you want them to fit to and they can make them fit perfectly without any gaps at all.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat

Can you tell me..

1)-how long they are?
2)-what is the diameter of the tapered small end?
3)-how did you position them? (i imagine the big part into the header with the tapered end sticking out to be covered by the muffler)

G,day I'm new to this site, have had a 2002 America from new and it's great to find a site comited to my bike.
I'm just starting to play around with my bike, have installed the freak and removed baffles from standard pipes. I have read about Dinqua's baffle replacement at newbonniville.com and am going the same route only different baffles. I also used his instructions on fitting new jets to carbies, "invaluble". How are your pipes going Dinqua?
Great reading the forums.
Keep the shiny side up.

Hello.
I work very long hours away from any PC terminals have not had a chance to read the posts, that is why I have not replied sooner.
If you make the reducers about 3 inches long, slide them into the header pipe end at the junction where the muffler clamps on with the small taper facing towards the rear,at the muffler shop they will expand the pipe so that it will slide in very snug, the rear end taper can be any size you want ,I have tried 35mm.30mm and 25mm all depends on how much noise you want to get through.
I just had the muffler men make up the three different sizes,it takes no time at all with the gear they have at hand.
I have even experimented with some stainless mesh tack welded over the smaller end to difuse the gas flow.
So all you do is keep experimenting till you get the sound you want.
Cheers.
Stevew

Great, thanks Steve. I've been looking forward to your reply. I'm gonna call midas now and see if they'll do it and what they'll cost. Did you find any difference between the various sizes and if so what? Also, Thanks again.

I would try a local mom and pop shop. Chain stores are too worried about liability issues. If they make the reducer they might worry about you filing suit if the reducer damaged your engine in some way (which it won't, but that doesn't seem to matter). Local shops don't usually seem to be as concerned about such things.

Learning from my mistakes... again and again.

I have...one anyway. I'll call more, but i have a feeling here in L.A because it's such a highly concentrated population they probably don't wanna bother with a $20 job when they are likely booked with real jobs.I may have to try and make my own.
