The thing i like about this cap is it's tamper proof. There's a tool that has two ear's on it that go's on your key ring.So you can't just unscrew the cap with your fingers.

Billybob, I thought that was the reason everybody changed caps to begin with. Because they couldn't get the bugger off. Now I have to carry a special wrench in my pocket. No pun intended.

Huh? I don't bother with the little tool at all. (Insert all bad jokes here) I just use the palm of my hand, (more bad jokes go here) and it spins right off.

It's a nice cap and looks so much better than stock.
I've had several people say how good it looks and the dealer who just replaced my front rotor was asking where he could get it from!!

Can I get some additional information on this cap mentioned in this thread. I have had my Speedmaster about a week and noticed it is very difficult to remove the stock gas cap when the tank builds up a vacuume.

Nobby, thanks for the quick response. Couple of questions, Is the install easy? and Will this do away with the difficulty of cap removal?

Hey Lyle
Install was a doddle and I've never had any problems with cap removal - old or new.
My mate has had problems with his Bonneville T100 - it might be a cap think. Dunno.
I'd say go for the new cap - they look really good and if you do have a faulty cap, problem solved!
(Hey Brent! What cut do I get here? )

Lyle,
Your tank should not be building a vacuum. There may be a problem with the tank vent...

Phil, mine has always done that since new. I figured it just happened. It's not so tight you can't get it off, but it is hard until I guess the pressure is released. How can you check the tank vent?

Look up under the right frontside of your tank. There is a small diameter tube running from there to back behind the carbs. Some models (CA) run this tube to an evaporative can, others have a check valve in there. Mine is just a tube that runs from the vent on the tank routed to behind and down below the carbs straight to the atmosphere. If you have a check valve, it may be blocked.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I've wondered why it was so hard to get off when filling up. Maybe I can find the problem.

Phil, I checked the hose. It runs behind the right carb to what must be the check valve (retained in a clip) and then behind the battery to the bottom of the bike. There weren't any kinks or visible signs of a problem. Is a bad check valve on a new bike common? I may have to wait until I get back to my dealer to get a replacement. They are 40 miles away (in a direction I rarely travel).

Phil, I went and checked. Located the tube that seems to run like yours, no check valve just runs back behind the carbs. I did not see anything out of the ordinary. However, its a new bike and I would not likely know what might be out of the ordinary. I do not want to get off topic but did you have a nice run down to Key West?

LCP, you didn't see somehing inline on the hose looking from the right side behind the carb? Whatever it is (teeny bit bigger than the hose), it is in a retainer clip. I'm assuming this must be a check valve. I had to remove the chrome fake air filter piece to see in there good. My hose continues on from there down across behind the battery and under bike.

Bob, I just went back out to look again. I did not see a clip. The tube seems to just run back behind the carb and then straight down.

Lyle, very interesting, mine is a 05 TA and I wonder if the factory has done this differently on diffenent models. If mine is a stuck check valve, it would explain the pressure build up in the tank as it empties.

Bob, believing this was a common issue, I went ahead and ordered the flush mount gas cap from Brent at Speemaster.com. His email to me advises that it is a vented cap and I thought this would resolve the issue and it looks real nice anyway.

Shouldn't be but if fuel got into the vent line, it would definitely plug it. Can you reach under the tank and pop the hose off? If you can, blow air into it. If you get back pressure, it's stuck. Try blowing air into the other end and it may unstick.
Lyle, we had a great time. I am writing up a trip report that I will stick over in Upcoming Rides in the Key West thread...

I'll take a look. It would be great if I can get the hose off (hard to see where it attaches) the tank without removing the tank. If I get it off, I've got to be able to get it back on. Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.

Phil, I found it was much easier to unplug the hose at the check valve which was in a retainer clip by the right carb. I took out the valve and found it to be ok but I'm not clear which way the valve should close. Should it allow air to the tank or from the tank? It was mounted to allow air out but not in. The clip must be to keep the valve vertical as gravity would open the valve. I also found that the end of the hose under the bike has a rubber plug in it. Should this have been removed when the bike was set up? Obvioulsy the breather hose can't breathe at all with this plug in it.

CORRECTION, there are 3 hoses ending under the bike, the tank vent hose was not plugged, the other two were. I made sure the vent hose was clear to the check valve and from the valve to the tank. My dealer said to leave the others plugged. The check valve is to prevent fuel from spilling in the event the bike falls over. It is possible for the valve to get stuck - I'll see if clearing it fixed the problem.

In the service manual pertaining to evaporative loss systems, it states that the cap will allow air in. One way vented, I guess. What I don't know if if this is true for Ca. models only. I know this probably just adds to the confusion on this issue, but thought it worth mentioning. I noticed that last night while pondering what to do with the ELS on a bike that lives in Mo.
Said Molly to James, that's a fine motorbike.
