Folks,

Has anyone installed a keyless ignition system on their America? I'm considering making one but I'm curious if there are any commercially made units available for when I give up in disgust.

You mean it's just going to be a push-button, or you're going to have a remote-control key fob (like a Toyota Prius)?

I gotta say, I would LOVE to have a totally keyless ignition that just senses that I have the key in my pocket. That would be slick -- and would make sure I don't forget my keys in the bike any more!

Something like the Guard Dawg is what I had in mind, something that parallels the ignition switch but still prevents someone who doesn't have the secret decoder ring from riding off.

I'm not a big fan of hanging my keys from the stock switch on the side because 1) I'm afraid something important will fall off (like the rest of my keys) and 2) I've walked off and left the keys there, and come back to a dead battery.

Do you know if anyone's installed a Guard Dawg on an America? The online hookup manual I found shows how to connect to the expected battery, ignition, and accessory circuits but the America ignition switch has like 6 wires coming out of it.

That's actually pretty cool. Maybe someday when I have some extra cash that isn't already spoken for.

The new Concours has that. If you have the little key box in your pocket, just jump on and go. The key is only for the bags.

Does anyone know what sort of distance away (approx) from the bike you have to be before it's deactivated?

Stop using your kill switch, it was not made for that. Use your key. I am not even sure if my kill switch works. I don't remember ever using it.

What happens when you forget to use the kill switch with the device? (dead battery}

For me, that is a lot of money for a gadget but it would be cool to have if it also had a proximity alarm that called your dog tag.

For the money This one looks good.

I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

That's what I ended up doing and haven't had a problem with forgetting keys lately, but I still don't like them dangling 16 inches above the highway, back where I can't see them.

I can make it so it doesn't draw any more current than a clock when the bike is parked. Even my cheesy battery can handle that for a season, and for the off-season I'll disconnect it. I already remove the 2-way radio for the winter, so pulling one more plug won't hurt anything.

I don't want the alarm calling me in the middle of the night if someone's messing around with the bike. I just want to come out in the morning and find a pair of smoldering sneakers where a thief used to be.

Thanks! That does look like a good option.
