Spent much of the day in my buddy's shop, finally cutting on my new gas tank. I cut out the top, cleaned up and flanged the edge, made a template, and my buddy metalworked the sheetmetal patch. Unfortunately he was out of welding gas so it didn't get finished today. But it's gonna be the awesomest tank ever.

Album with larger pictures (and a bonus surprise).

I really gotta get a new camera. I took these with my buddy's digital SLR. What an amazing camera.

A little bit of both. He has a roller-brake-shear combo unit. He rolled a crown north-south, then used a shrinker to get the sides to curl down, then when that started to make too much of a ridge around the sides, he massaged it with hammer and dolly. All the while he was whining about how he wished he had an english wheel. He's going to tack the back first and hammer weld the final shape as he tacks it down before finish-welding it all around, alternating spots naturally so as to not warp it. Then a new gas filler bung and a little bit of mud the top will be ready for paint. We will be resealing the inside of the tank. To give you some (two) hints on the gas filler...

Okay, so I'm horrible at hinting...

Hey, does anyone know if I'm getting myself in trouble by eliminating the vent tube from the tunnel to the filler bung? My new filler cap is vented. Planning on welding the tube shut. I know it was discussed previously, just too late and too tired to search for it right now.

P.S. Also filling the emblem holes on the sides of the tank.

I've ripped out the vent line from the tank and plugged the nipple. No problems if you have a vented gas cap. Makes it so much easier when taking off and putting on the tank.

Following your project with great interest!!!

I plugged the hole as well when I put on a vented cap. No problems, and yes, tank removal is a breeze.
I remember you talking about a fuel sight gauge a long time ago, that will look awesome!

I'm not a fan of that hunk o' plastic either. Wow John, GREAT project ya got going there. Making me want to... no, I'm going to start the hunt for a spare tank.

Btw... was it full of gas vapour before you started? If so, how did you eliminate all them fumes?

Hopefully. I'm going to curve the tube around the "knee pocket" of the tank. Still debating plain clear tubing (came with the "kit") or picking up some braided clear tubing. Also thinking about ways to incorporate a glass tube, maybe a spiraled glass tube. I dunno, we'll see.

I picked this tank up 2-3 years ago. It's had plenty of time to vent and dry out.

I don't know anybody who IS a fan of the plastic dash. At best people are ambivalent about it. I have a couple other ideas about doing something WITH the dash rather than going through all of this work. Might try it on the current candy orange tank after it's "retired."

I have one of those Veypor units but I'm thinking about scrapping that and going with a couple whiteface mini gauges. I saw a 2" speedometer with trip meter and built-in indicator lights somewhere, maybe Drag Specialties or J&P Cycles. That and a matching tach would be titsonaritz.

And yes, we'll have plenty of time to chat next Saturday. Hmmmm, wonder what that's all about...

John,
I am very envious about the Ness grips...I was debating doing with those grips and controls BUT then I cant use my Breakaway.
Its all looking good! How exciting it must be to see it all taking place in front of you.

Keep updating us and posting those pics.

I don't have the Battastini/Ness grips yet. I'm kinda on the fence about them. There's part of me, since I'm blacking out so much stuff, that just wants to go with a different style of black rubber grip, like these Baxters:

But that's the least of my worries on this project.

That's a bigger setup (the bracket and stock indicator lights) than I want to do. Looks interesting though.

Here's what I want, both 2.4" whiteface: mini speedo mini tach

Couple P-clamps and done.

Erle asked about my green bulldog avatar request:

Quote:

Green on burnt orange?
Or are ya gonna change the color?

Not going to do another orange bike. At least not yet. I've had the paint for over 2 years (even designed a web site based on my ideas http://johnbedard.com/design2/ -still going to adapt that to friarsride.com someday). My buddy insists it will still be good since it hasn't been opened since then. This is the paint scheme:

I was going to try and keep it all a secret until it was done but I don't care about that anymore. Originally we planned to have a matte finish but I'm rethinking that since Gene said matte finishes are hard to fix. That's my only regret about going with a candy paint job back in '02 on my current tin, can't fix rock chips.

My current orange tin is going up on the shelf. The tank is in decent shape but the paint on the fenders is trashed. Might keep the orange tank as a museum piece (I still love it) and buy another one, painting it and my original fenders to match. Maybe the original black/silver paint job.

Looks like you've got a good start on a nice custom. Can't wait to see the finished tank.

Does the stock speedo cable connect to the speedometer or do you need a converter?....I like this better than the one I posted

I want Baxter grips too but my budget didn't allow it. Keep up the good work.

I've seen sight gauges on a number of old school, rat, and retro choppers and just thought it would be cool because I'm going for a sort of retro inspired (but not authentic) look.

There are a number of "kits" out there, but they all require welding. I didn't like the bungs in some of the kits so I bought this one (came with a clear tube, though):

We're going to weld them in so they stick out about 1/16-1/8" from the tank.

That tank's gonna look awesome when it's finished FriarJohn. If that sight tube is 1/4" i.d. & 3/8" o.d., Lowbrow customs has colored fuel line in several colors. There's also this place:

Those are great sources. I was thinking more along these lines (see what I did there?)...

I just don't know if the nylon braiding would obscure the view of the gas too much.

FWIW...Id suggest clear or a color to offset the paint. The braiding may take too much attention as a "sore thumb" effect vs. a "cool but functional feature".

Oh...and while your at it...might be cool to use the same tubing all the way through the fuel feed to the carbs. A sort of "bring it together" thing.

I think the braided line looks less retro but more "racery." Yes, I just made that word up.

I'll probably just use the clear line that came with the kit, at least initially.

That braided line just don't look right IMHO. Just not 'authentic' enough? Go clear so it looks more like glass.
