If you can get hold of a BMW. Spark Plug Tube Spanner- there actually a long tube socket 18mm one end and I think 14mm the other - they come in the BMW K100RS Tool Kit - you might have to grind the outside down a little, and you don't have to remove your tank

Like Newt said, here's from the "tech vault"

From: Fishercat
I know this baby fits like a glove. I have one and it's $3.99 at Sears. It's a nice thin walled sparkplug socket.

The shipping is $48 for a $4 socket not really worth it

Can you get Sidchrome tools in the UK?

I use a long series 18mm socket of theirs, works great.

Paul,
If I wasn't leaving for overseas this coming week, I'd offer to buy the Sears socket for you and ship it to you, at cost plus a little bit to cover the gas (petrol). Perhaps, another fellow Yankee can help you out? Help a fellow BA member out. That $48 for shipping is outrageous!
Good luck in getting one.

I would be glad to help out with that but I have no idea what it would cost to ship privately either.

If you don't mind paying a bit extra for a really nice tool then consider one of these; perhaps you can find a UK source for it:
Motion Pro 18mm Wrench

Works great with my 07 SM.

I made my own!

MotionPro is made in Taiwan, but like many things, it is not sold here.

Tried a few alternatives, and ended up with this tool.
I used my angle grinder to shave off the socket wall near the engine block.
The other thing I like is I don't have to insert a screwdriver like into the Honda tool, which I know I will end up scratching the engine paint... I know me!

Here's a pic, but sorry, my cell phone camera is pretty crappy! (Time to move up to an iPhone!)

Ha ha!
Would I go through all this trouble and then realize that it doesn't fit the plug? ... you guys take me for a fool or what?

Sorry, but the angle of the picture doesn't allow you to see that the angled part is hollow, and perfectly sized to let the insulator and tip thru...

Got the Motion Pro, it works great and even has room for a ratchet w/o moving the gas tank. The plug holding seal inside is very tight and takes a bit of jockeying to get it on and off but I'm sure it will loosen up a bit w/ use

I use the Britool long reach 18mm 3/8" square drive socket. Works fine. Much thinner wall than the 1/2" square drive socket

Have you tried this mate, UK firm and I've had stuff from them before and they are a great company to deal with.
