Hi Folks. We just picked up a new 2007 Speedmaster at the end of October/09. It was brand spanking new, and purchased at a local dealership. All indications are that it's a Canadian bike as the speedometer reads in KM/h only.

Today, while looking for the fuel tank vent tube under the bike, I couldn't find it. Another member of the forum made a reference to California emissions canisters, and that's what I have.

Is it normal for Canadian spec Triumphs to come with California emissions gear... even for 2007 models?

Thx,
H.

I bought two 07 Americas in March(ish) of 07, both in the state of Wa, one had no Ca emissions and one did.

No big deal. You didn't get ripped off or anything. I think Triumph sent what they had to who needed it...with the exception of Ca...who probably only got Ca emission bikes.

Yep dude, that sure looks like a "California emissions canister" there, alright! Yep, just like the ones that were* on both my 1995 Triumph Sprint and my 2002 Bonnie America when I purchased 'em new here in California.

(*-"were", as in those suckers are now sittin' up on a ledge in the garage....you see, at present there are no yearly emission or safety inspections in California, as I understand there are in a few other states, and so those are often the very first things we Yanks in the Golden State yank off new motorcycles when we buy 'em.)

So, here's my guess as to how you ended up with one of those on your bike....

Both the country code of Canada AND the state code of California is "CA", right?!

And so dude...either somebody in Hinckley England(that's "GB", BTW) must've written "CA" in the wrong place(country code box v. state code box) on the shipping container your bike was shipped in, OR he thinks Canada is now part of the U.S....specifically, California!!!

And so, you have two choices here...EITHER you rip that thing off your bike, which BTW is a pretty simple process,(that is UNLESS of course those things are now mandated up there too AND you guys have to go through those yearly inspections which I mentioned earlier), OR you start talkin' like a californian and start callin' everybody "dude"!!! Yep, those are your two choices alright...dude!!!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Then how did I get one in Wa?

Thanks for the replies, and insight.

In the automobile world, California emissions generally consume more fuel, are more complex, have drivability problems, cost more to maintain and purchase, produce less power. Fuel injection pretty much eliminated much of this, though.

Getting CA emissions in Canada isn't required. I live in BC, and there are no emissions testing for motorcycles... at least yet. Our emissions standards are much lower than California, so the CA bike will definitely satisfy our pollution standards. I'm not sure about drivability, fuel economy , etc.

Thx,
H.

Well, here's my theory about that one, Z:

"WA", sounds like somebody cryin', right?! And so, when that shipping clerk in Hinckley wrote "WA" on the shipping crate your "CA" model arrived into Washington State in, he was probably thinkin' somethin' along the lines that he'd send a "CA" model to you poor guys up there who are always cryin' about all that rain and cold you guys have to ride in up there all the time, and so maybe by sendin' you a "CA" model instead, he might've thought that he could somehow cheer you guys up by sending you poor wet devils up there a little ray of California sunshine!!

(yep...that might be how you got one of those babies, alright!!!)

Personally I think WA stands for WAZZUP and CA stands for CAN"TUNDERSTAND why the emission controls are on.

I just checked with the factory in Hinkley and there's a Triumph dealer in Sammamish Washington that calls everyone Dude. Apparently he used Dude on the order form for a Black Bonnie, and between finding Dude on the order form, and seeing an address in Sammamish (which sounds like a town named by someone high on pot) they decided that it had to be an order for California. To verify this, check your owners manual, it should have the special California warning that "riding a motorcycle after smoking pot could be hazardous".

08 America, A/I &, Calif emissions "stuff" gone, air box removed & battery relocated, billet intakes, UNI Pods, 145 mains, 42 pilots, Stage 2 igniter, intminators, 813 cams, Progressive 412's, modified seat.

Just a follow up. Went to my dealer today, and he had a couple of the new left over 2007's still there, like ours. They didn't have the California emissions on them. I spoke to the owner about this, and he was really surprised. All those bikes were bought at the same time, and ours seems to be the only CA bike.

Any other Canadians running with California emissions on their Speedmaster/America's?

Thx,
H.
