Hey guys, went to ride the bike the other day and low and behold. The battery is flat. Trying to get the battery out but i don't have the right size allen key. Can someone tell mw what size i need to get. Very annoying having to go to lowes to buy a tool to charge a battery.

the allen key inside the fuse cover fit? been that long since i threw my battery bracket away i dont remember the size sorry

I think it is 6mm

Mine is a torx head bolt, but I bought the bike used, so I don't know if the torx is OEM. I use a close in size metric allen wrench and it works well, but the bolt is not corroded - in other words - my method of ham hand / wrong wrench may not work well for all.

Just got to thinking - if we carry allen wrenches for a mobile tool kit, it would be a good idea to change this bolt to an allen head.

OEM is Torx T30, you can get away with using 6mm Allen key

Just wondering.

Why is there torx bolts at all? Every tool box has a set of allen keys. Wouldn't it be better if it was either all torx or all allen head bolts? Why have both on one machine?

You mean there is a Allen Key inside the fuse cover....jeez, I could have had this finished days ago. Thanks guys..

Advance Discount Auto sells a hex bit set that has metric as well as inch allen wrenches, torx bits, security torx bits, nut drivers, and a few phillips and slotted bits. Has both long and short 3mm and 5mm allen bits. About $10. I carry one with me and use it every time I work on my bike.

There's an allen key inside the fuse cover on speedmasters but not americas. It's to remove the seat (which is why the Americas don't get one).

The reason it's a torx screw instead of an allen screw for the battery cover is because if you have an alarm fitted it's important that the battery can't be easily accessed, thereby rendering the alarm useless.

my America has an Allen key in it as does Karens (Both are 07s).

There are only two torx bolts on teh bike, one at the battery strap the other at the chain guard. I swapped both for Allens.

My 07 America has the allen key, thanks to Islandbum I found it today.

My America has one , i thought it was to get to your battery in a hurry if needed

My 08 America has an allen key.

Must be a later model thing. Back when I bought mine (2004) they only came out in Speedies. How generous of Triumph to include a "tool kit" on all models now.

I haven't looked, just assumed as it's an America it didn't have one.

When I bought my America, I asked about a toolkit just after signing the paperwork and the salesman responded with, "Do you have a cell phone?"

I've been piecing-together a kit from spare tools I already had. It's more personal that way and gives me that all-important sense of accomplishment.
