Dear? Safety? Now there's an oxymoron for ya! But I am pondering a new question (for me) when it comes to riding and deer. That question is: Is it safer to ride with loud pipes or quiet pipes? Let me explain...
Loud Pipes The deer know yer coming 1/4 mile away (at least)... they've been alerted and stop grazing. They look up for any signs of danger. Within 14 seconds (at 60 MPH) yer almost where they are and at that precise moment they decide to bolt at 90 degrees to the perceived threat and run right in front of you. 15 seconds and it could be over... for everyone! Hmmmmmm... or,
Quiet Pipes You keep the stock pipes and when you approach the deer who are still quietly grazing and not alerted to any perceived threat... they continue to graze while you pass by safely.
Are these two scenarios realistic? I wonder. Curious as to what you all have to say 'bout this.

Mountainman,
You have just explained what Kangaroos do.
Ride anywhere west of the Blue Mountains in Australia and sheep do exactly the same.
The last one (lamb) cost me a new radiator and exhaust system for my 4x4.
Meaning keep the loud exhaust, My 4x4 isn,t noisy.

Sometime an individual comes up with a subject so obvious.... I think you have something here.....Once upon a time riding my GL1000 ( quiet by any measure) I counted 131 deer on the side of the road one night , all within a 50-mile stretch of Hwy.... they looked as I got close but none of them "bolted".... conversly , when I had my Kawasaki Vulcan with "loud pipes saves lives" there were several that descided to say "howdy" to my new ride in the middle of the road !!!....... BUT I must say...cagers have told me ( sometimes with a one-finger salute) they "heard" me...... did this keep them from pulling into my lane ??? This is a great question to ponder that you have posed my Canadian cousin.

On the last ride of the year a few weeks ago passed a deer standing beside the road it looked interested but didn't move. I didn't see it until I was passing those big brown eyes staring at me almost saying "I could have but thought better for the both of us" Returned home put the bike and its centre stand where I could admire the thing of beauty and went to find the tools to put it to bed for the winter. What about Moose, do they prefer loud or quiet pipes? Any Newfs listening?

I think although larger, Moose have even tinier brains than white-tail or mule deer if that's possible . IMO Bighorn sheep bring up the brain power-traffic reasoning rear by a large margin.
I think Mountainman needs to slow down, or speed up

Keith, You make some good "points" or "observations" but I have first hand experience that can take this post in the opposite direction. Background on the bike is in my signature...SS spares long cannons that Keith and a few others have heard first hand Example 1: Karen and I were riding on some nice back roads with some nice sweepers only to come upon a buck standing in the road. I had to come to a complete stop, revved the bike (hard), honked the horn (PIAA) and the buck only turned to walk away. Example 2: riding with you last summer, shortly after the guy joined us at the rest stop. We approached a mature deer on the shoulder. We all slow down, I rev and rev and reeeeevvvv....nothing till we get right next to it and even then it only moved a few feet. example 3: Baker City a couple years ago. Karen, Bob and I are riding along. I come upon a pack (?) of three deer. I stop and rev, rev, rev but they just stare at me. NO movement. I wonder if maybe we take both your theory and my experience and combine it to say "wild" deer are dangerous to us as they are skittish and we really dont know what they will do HOWEVER "wild but domestically exposed" deer are calm and will just stand there and stare as we pass. I come to this as I think about how many mornings I pass a deer grazing on the side of a very busy road, fwy, or )most recently) streets in my neighborhood. Huh!

Yeah Z... it would seem those so called 'wild' deer are the most dangerous of 'em all. I don't know, I wanna think loud pipes help but with your pipes and the vroom, vroom examples you gave it leaves room for doubt. And I suppose cages are for the most part pretty quiet yet they encounter deer a lot.
Pipes may not be a factor in the equation at all... I still wonder though. Must be something we can do, like mount a speaker on the front that blasts out the sound of a pack of wolves on the hunt.

On the way home last week next to Silver Lake, a young deer was in the road. I laid on the horn to move her along. She stood there and looked at me. No light was in her eyes.

I hit a deer on a bike 32 years ago. Tweren't for skill, but only by virtue of a power greater than I that I didn't go down. Almost crapped my britches though. Traded the banged up bike for a used '68 FI Chevelle. (Black with white stripes - me likey-ed) Didn't have much better luck, and hit an invisible deer with that one. The Chevelle frame now supports and trailers my portable Wisconsin twin powered bucksaw / wood splitter. (and no, you can't borrow it. ) Guess it's a life long curse. Used to look pretty much like this '70

about 20 days after buying the America I hit one had stock pipes then. put her back together with loud pipes and now one rev almost always sends them back into the feilds. also lets everyone behind me know theres trouble. I think loud pipes do save lives IMHO.

Okay... if not something physical to keep the deer from creating havoc... then let's get metaphysical. Because in this scenario it's not us OR them... it's US AND THEM. Everyone loses. I'm seriously exploring more holistic/metaphysical approaches to the problem. I'll keep you posted if and when I experience some sort of revelation on the topic of deer/human safety. Meanwhile....

Eeh...don't waste your time goin' THAT route, Keith.
You see, I myself once trekked to the mountaintop on my StreetTracker to seek the answer to this whole crazy deer question from the "great" guru Maharishi Mobili, and once I reached that old bearded fart up there(who BTW I found sittin' on an ol' beat up BSA 441 Victor in the lotus position...which you would THINK should have told me somethin' about the guy RIGHT THERE!), all he said to me was..."Cervidae are kind'a stupid!"
(so ya better try to find some other avenue towards some kind'a enlightenment when it come THIS friggin' issue, 'cuz it sure doesn't look like the answer lies in any of that there "Metaphysical" stuff, ol' buddy!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Bin there, done that eh, Dwight? Well darn diddly dang... and I thought I was onto something. Well then, rather than going the Eastern philosophical way of Gurus, mountaintops and enlightenment how about something closer to home like peyote induced trance-like altered consciousness to explore (among what would surely be other things) the spirit animal world. Maybe there are answers there we just don't know about.

I hear ya Keith. Seems like new sounds are what draws attention. Deer seem to be curious. The only way to trust a deer is when ya have em at a disadvantage . yumyum. Nor'East '06, Ryan and Chy about got personal with some deer on the Skyline Drive. Vera Lynn was leading, snorting fire and brimstone, when some of those demons stepped out behind me in front of them. Loud pipes didn't scare em off. Riding on most roads after dark is a trip. Ya have to slow way down when the forest closes in on the road, but ya can open her up again when the pastures open up and the moon shines bright. Ride my see saw. Yeehaw. Of course in subdivisions, the deer are like cats, they don't listen and they don't love ya.
