Mine never broke in (even after close to 14,000 miles). I'll be sending it in soon to get it reworked. Other than that it's a great seat, although I mostly bought it for the backrest.

Stern, is that the solo seat plus passenger pillion that you bought from Corbin? (Not the gunfighter?)

Absolutely the best money I've spent on the bike. Bought it online from Corbin.

The most striking thing to me is how much more solidly planted I feel on the bike. I think with the stock seat you're working hard to maintain your position without realizing it and you're using your whole upper body to control the bike. With the corbin, even without the backrest you're rock solid and you use your shoulders and arms for control. Makes a big difference to me.

When I purchased my SM, my intention was to keep the stock seat and put my $$ first towards the Freak and exhaust, so 50 miles later I am on the Corbin website ordering the seat and pillion. I was surprised how firm the seat was when i got it, but after my first 100+ ride I was pleased when I got off the bike and walked away without that, I need to stretch for a minute, feeling. I purchased the backrest a month later. Thou Corbin is very proud of their stuff it is worth every penny. I recommend it as the first mod after purchase.

I have the Corbin Gunfighter (see my photo posts), and I really like it. It did take about 500+ miles to get broken in, but it has become more comfortable every time I ride with it and is beginning to fiut like a nice Italian loafer - for my butt. It's also helped alleviate my back problems after riding. The stock seats are okay as any stock seats go, but I'm glad I invested in a Cobin. Oh, and you can order in various faux leather materials and colors too.

It is worth it. I got the backrest but didn't use it for the first time until Sept. It was amazing how much different the feel was.

Well let me explain. Yeah, I love the seat but didn't have the backrest for the Georgia rally ride. The Corbin, for me is extremely comfortable and it made the ride down to Chy's bearable.

I got the backrest for the Nor'East rally and that was the first time I used it. The riding was considerably different, not better, but different. For long rides to rallies I'll definately have the backrest on, I feel like it is more of a lounger than a bike seat. When riding it almost forces me to sit in a straighter position.

Any other time I don't use the backrest the seat is more than adequate then. Does any of this make sense?

Gary,
I've said it before and I'll say it again. For the money invested, get Rick Mayer to custom build your saddle. He builds your seat to fit your butt and he stands behind it.
If anything is wrong, he'll fix it. His seat are custom built, where Corbin is not. I love Corbin seats, I've owned 3 of them - but they will not compare to Rick's seat.
Now, Rick's saddle will take about 5 miles to "break in" (or maybe the moment you sit on it). At least check it out. The only complaint I've seen from Rick's seat is "I hate having to stop every 180 miles for gas". That my friend, is a great saddle.
Get a Corbin, but expect great quality. Rick's seats are just a "cut above" the rest. Rick's Dad, Bill Mayer, invented the Russell DayLong saddle - Rick grew up knowing his craft, and he's an orthopedic nurse. Rick Mayer Saddles

Excuse me?

I beg to differ. When I purchased my Corbin, they required a lot of information about me (inseam, size, weight, riding style, etc.) just like Mayer does. THEN they built the seat AND it was built for me. Just like Mayer does....

Perhaps our definitions of custom differ?

I am not saying Mayer seats are not great but let's not put ideas in people's heads that his are custom and Corbins are not....

I considered mine a "custom" as well. I contacted Corbin directly & they requested all my "sizing" information, as well as, type of leather & other options.

As an option, here's the seat without the studs. Also, be aware thst when you order the seat directly from Corbin you can specify that you want their softer foam. It's still very firm, but when you press down on it with your hand (or butt), there's some "give" in there, as opposed to the standard hard-as-a-brick feel. The flap on the back of the seat covers the slot the backrest (not yet ordered) slides into. If you're not ordering the backrest right away but think you might in the future, be sure to mention that you want the backrest provision.

Dennis you are mistaken about Corbin. They did a fantastic job on my seat. I called them and gave them info on my inseam, weight, etc. They also did a great job with the image I wanted put in leather on the seat.

I got my Corbin this last spring (2005) and have 4-5000 miles on it. I've always thought it was a squidge too hard. My butt was going to sleep after 50 to 100 miles. I didn't experience that with my stock Speedmaster seat. I think it was better toward the end of the summer, though, because I don't remember it happening as much. The Corbin is noticably more narrow than the stock Speedmaster seat, which gives me less real estate to plop my butt on. I assume it's narrower than the America seat too.

I sit an inch or 2 lower with the Corbin, and I like the more abrupt slope and firmness of the back of the seat. It gives me more support. Also it keeps me from flying off the back when I accelerate, which is a good thing because the black and yellow Speedmaster is so much faster than all the other Triumphs.

Just ordered my Corbin last week based on the recommendations of this site. Faux- Baby alligator, studs, and gun-metal piping.

I bought a used TA seat with gel pad several weeks ago with the intention of getting it embroidered and stitched to my specification, but no one LOCALLY would hoop it for fear of ruining the covering. At least the 3 places were honest.

It'll go on Ebay this weekend to recover what I can.

Looking forward to my Church of the American Secular Humanist (C.A.S.H.) Coming of Once a Year Gift-Man present.

Regards,

Oh man......i've also been looking at that faux baby gator ! In fact i emailed them a few days ago and no answer. Do they answer thier emails usually? By the way, what was the cost difference between baby gator and regular leather?

No extra for your choice of leather "styles", colored piping, and studs. But, nothing saved if you choose to go without studs or don't specify a particular "colored" piping. $299 for the seat and $25 for the Fedex ground shipping ($324 total). Production time is currently 1-2 weeks.

Tom

Do you know if they do simple recovers? I want to keep the stock pan and foam and just want it recovered. But i sent them an email a few days ago and got no answer. I suspect they didn't answwer because they don't do simple recovers. If thats the case i wouldn't want to deal with them anyway because that shows a total disregard for the customer when they won't even bother emailing a "we don't do that" reply because theres no money in doing so ! I'll reserve that label for now as i don't know if it's just because they're busy tho.

Corbin does the whole seat construction, and I don't see on their website where they offer simple recovering. Their seats (at least the gunfighter I have) come with their own seat pan and it locks in place with a key rather than a hex screw like stock. If all you want is to have your own stock seat recovered, then any local auto upholstery shop should be able to take care of you.

Maybe Corbin hasn't gotten back with you, because they're considering your request but need to think it over first?

I would if i could, But the whole reason for doing it in the first place is because of that faux gator leather that corbin has. If i could find that elsewhere i would have it done locally.

Has anybody tried the low profile custom seat from Brent? I really like the look of the tooled flame seat and that would look fantastic with my paint. Are these things comfortable or are they just aesthetically pleasing? If these aren't commfy, can Corbin or Rick Mayer do a seat like this with flames?

I tried e mails a couple years ago. No response either. Then I just remembered the old fashion way of dialing up the 800 number. They were very good to deal with.

from reading corbin site and an email from them. They will work with you on most anything you want but they only offered two America's seats- a solo and gunfighter. they offer 22 different textured leathers and one smooth leather in 10 colors. you can stich it anyway you want with insets on the seat or any number of options.Even studs are an option[free]. 800-538-7035

I seem to remember a post from a year or so ago that indicated Corbin has 2 manufacturing plants, Califonia and one elsewhere (Florida?) and that people suggested different degrees of satisfaction. Easily corrected. Sorry, I forget the exact details. The Corbin solo seat I have had 2 seasons was/is very comfortable from the first mile, although I was prepared for a break-in period. I had a side photo taken of how I sat (position) on the stock seat. Right up against the rear swell. I have heard great things about the Mayer seats as well.

Maybe I'm all or at least partially wet . Time to sit in the garage and go "vroom, vroom".

Nope,
Corbin has 4 molds for their seats - one for shorts, one for talls and heavy & light in each. Then they add the cover you want. That ain't what I want. See you in Georgia?

Dennis, "See you in Georgia?" I know you were asking Freedom, but I'm asking you, you rolling over into Georgia this May? Same goes for you John, Ya thinking about Georgia? I sure that the event section was up and running. The one where we could add our name to the list and modify it over time. Heck all this recent talk about Georgia had me thinking bout kuntry kookin. Pork spare ribs? I have been knockin' out ribs pretty often lately. Baby-backs slowed smoked with Peach or Apple Wood for about 4 hours on a charcoal fire. Shoot, now I am hungry.

Did you guys finish all of those ribs? If so I hope Lynn is in the gym this morning!

I know Phil. Some people. Since we are talking about food now on a Corbin seat thread, I would ask for any of our brethren across the pond to forward any good curry recipes they might have lying around. I am always up for a good curry.

And with that, my 400th post.

Ryan, in addition to the marinade, then the rub, I candy the slab during the holding period. (I do take trips to the garage to look at Vera adorned in her corbin glory.) Here is last night's ad hominy, candy paste, ingredients...

. Notice Robertsons' Original English Thick Cut Orange Marmalade.

Edited: I forgot to put the bottle of Maharajah Curry in the photo. Thanks for reminding me Ryan!
