We are thinking of relocating to NC raleigh area any one down there with any advice. We would be trying to live east of the city 20 miles or less out.
Life need a little Triumph!

Can't help with info regarding that area, but you'll love having a almost year round riding season. Wife and I moved from MA back in '99. A couple of years in VA, then a year in FL (hated that!), then to NC. Love it here. Not sure about a RAT chapter in Raleigh, but there is a Ton Up chapter: http://www.tonup-nc.com/Email the webmaster, he could probably tell you.

You'll be moving closer to the "Dragon." Enjoy!

Great area, long riding season, some great roads, close to the mountains, close to the beach, close to the big city, and country roads 20 mins away....

Where are you from? The water and air is different here, and I grew up with bagels in NJ and NY. The bagels here aren't horrible, but they are different.

Raleigh's pretty much like any city these days. Lots of traffic during rush hour, a fair amount of stuff to to, people in a hurry. It will be some what of a culture shock for you I guess, but not as much these days as in the past. There are lots of nice roads to ride away from the citys. Just expect to meet lots of deer and bugs.

Sorry, you can't move yet. We are over stocked on New Yorkers and you will need one to move out to free up a slot.

You probably meant Greenwich CONNECTICUT, didn't ya?! Sorry...never mind. (hey, come to THINK of it Charlie, they wouldn't happen to have some kind'a big ol' clock there in Greenwich Connecticut TOO, would they???....just for future reference, you understand!)

In all seriousness, if you can handle a commute, I would suggest one of the small outlying towns 30 to 45 minutes away from Raleigh. Having lived in NC all of my life I can tell you with absolute certainty that the farther away from the city you get, the slower the pace and the greater the southern hospitality.
If you haven’t spent much time down here then it may unnerve you the first time you meet some friendly stranger who goes out of their way to strike up a conversation for no reason, and may not get the hint if you are not in a talkative mood.

Yep Rev, I know exactly what you're talkin' about there. However, I don't think that that's just limited to any concept of "southern hospitality". Nope. I think that this can be much more attributed to the Big City/Small Town differences throughout this country, and probably even throughout the world.
Case in point: One of the first things my wife Judie and I would often mention to folks here in the environs of greater L.A. about the folks in Prescott AZ, where our other house is located, is that total strangers would smile and say hello as we'd pass 'em on the sidewalk in Prescott, and that almost all the service employees, even in the "Big Box" stores like Home Depot, Lowes and CostCo seemed friendlier and more helpful, which are situations pretty much at odds which most people who live in larger metropolian areas would find.
(of course, in REALLY small backwater towns it DOES often seem to be the case that the locals revert BACK to a more cautious approach and interaction with strangers...though THAT could ALL be due to all the METH that those friggin' rubes THERE are usin' lately, ya know!!!!)

You know from all of the folks that I know who came down here from NY I've never met one that didn't do two things.
#1 talk about how much better the weather was.
#2 complain about how they cannot find a decent pizza anywhere

Bring a NY pizza, or four, with you and I may ride up with a friend or two to help you move in.

Okay, is it only ME here, or is this startin' to remind any of you other guys of Joe Pesci in "My Cousin Vinny" and his "Magic Grits Defense" in that movie???..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxpoYxrn73Y&feature=fvw

Any particular reason you decided east of Raleigh? If you come Southeast, you can get in Harnett county and greatly reduce your tax burden.

Are you coming down for work? I may have missed it in this thread. If not, Raleigh isn't the nicest part of NC.

It is a bit Hillbilly for me but the riding cannot be beat in Murphy NC. Quote:
In Brasstown, NC, (right at the NC-TN-GA tri-state border) they will be dropping the opossum - yes, the famed New Year's Possum Drop. It's a non-alcoholic family event that begins with a blessing and singing of church songs followed by the lowering of a caged opossum (Didelphis virginiana, I believe). An event so memorable that The Carringer Chronicle called it, "more exciting that when the hogs ate Granny!"
"Note: The opossum is not actually "dropped", it is lowered with great care. We treat our little friend with respect, hold him in awe, and do not inflict any injury or traumatize God's creature of the night." Surely the townfolk had to be drinking when they dreamed this up.
