I installed a set of FCR 39mm carbs on the SM last night. and put 60 or so miles on today (in spite of the fine weather). All I can say is these carbs really kick a@#. Well worth it. I don't think I could have done much more to the CVKs and they ran good. But these FCR are in another league. I think that I may be creeping up on the potential of this motor, and it is fun.

I want badly to get it on a dyno, as the carb tuning is just 'seat of the pants', and it feels rich in the middle. Plus the curiousity is killin' me. Between the weather (it is cold here) and work (have to go to it) the dyno may have to wait until spring.

I will diffinitely post as soon as I have a run in.

Nice job, great pics, but i have a question im not a engine person the stock manifolds are 36mm. the FCR are 39. the 39 must funnel to 36mm. what is the benefit. besides a far superior design carburator. thanx

The CVK's are partially obstructed by the butterfly valve, so CVK carbs don't even get the full benefit of the 36mm bore.

Another benefit depending on where you get the FCRs is that they will come with a matched set of intakes.

I have a set on my short list...to bad want the list is longer than the money list right now.

Yeah, my list never goes away. As soon as I seem to think I've got most of what I want one of you bast#rds come up with another item I want too.

It's going to be interesting how those FCR's go but I forget some of you guys have to hibernate your bikes for a few months. At least it gives you time to square away any issues and to check over things without taking your bike off the road.

Neither NB or TP have manifolds for the america and SM. the bonnie manifolds will not work. I recall that fast fred was working on something for the america/ SM's.

my intake manifolds are not quite stock, I removed a fair amount of material while reshaping them to match my head work last winter. I do not believe are an impediment to these carbs at this point.

I should also mention that, these were not a straight bolt on for the SM like they would be for the bonnie. I had to modify the throttle cable housings and make up a carb brace to fit off of the light weight freak. I also made adapters to allow the use of my K&N pods from the CVK's (which are interestingly, 4 mm larger in diameter than the FCR inlets). fussy work but nothing to far out there.

I understand that TPUSA includes the manifolds with their kit, you say that's not so?

they say their manifolds do not fit the america/ sm, just the bonnies. the mounting angles are different. frames are different.

These are the intakes needed for more flow, Fast Fred's billet intakes. You can see how they are angled on the carb side to allow the carb to hang level. Bonneville intakes are straight cut and the carbs angle upwards.

TPUSA must have updated the site...quoted from the TPUSA site
"Our kit comes complete with our billet intake manifolds, a must for the FCR's Available for the Bonneville, Thruxton, Scrambler, America and Speedmaster."

Ahh...good to know, thanks. Fred's website was down when last I checked, is he back in the saddle yet?

I read that also, then sent an email to carlos on 11/10, his reply was 'no manifolds for the America, and SM'. If you are going to order these it would be worth verifying, maybe they got some in.

I'll vouch for the intakes that Fast Fred provides. I've had mine for about 4 months and they fit perfectly, look great and work fine. And Fred is a great guy to work with. I ordered mine just before he went down with broken ribs and while there was a short delay in him getting the intakes to me he kept me informed and kept the delay to a very minimum. I would strongly recommend dealing with him.

I like the sound of 'better mileage'. Are the BC manifolds the same ones that Fast Fred makes?

It is going to be tough waiting out the next 5 months or so with the speedy wrapped in its winter cocoon and not being able to play with the carbs.

They look very similar in the pictures. The ones I got ran $199 with everything.Bolted on good,no problems.Cost a nice chunk of change, but I think they were worth it.The way I look at it is they will pay for themselfs in the improvement in fuel mileage.I got the black ones. They did not offer them on there site when I ordered mine.I called them and talked to them to see if the ones for the Scrambler would fit and no they will not.Nice people to deal with.Had them in a very short time out of California.
