Hello. I've spent many hours on this site reading about saddlebags. WOW! Tons of info here.

Anybody ever try the Edge bags? They have a model 110 (20 X 7.5 x 11.5) and 110XL (20 X 9.5 X 11.5) listed. They say that they are 15" at mounting point as they are tapered bags.

http://www.edgeleather.com/Edge-Products/Edge-Rigid-Saddlebags/Model-110.html

Any input would be appreciated. Since this board is pretty much unanimous about Easy Brackets, I'll go that route.

Thanks,
H.

I think you might find them wide. They look a bit like the saddleman slant drifters that I've got. I originally had what saddlemen called "Large" which I think were 15.5" L x 9.5" H x 5" D. These looked great but I never had enough room.

I went up to what they call "Jumbo" which are 17.5" L x 10.5" H x 6" D and they have quite a bit more room but they make my bike look fat. Even the smaller 110's you ref are way bigger than my jumbos and, slung on the easybrackets you might have trouble getting thru your garage door.

Also, your friends may talk behind your back about how your bike is putting on weight.

The pic below shows the jumbos(ok, I just wanted a picture of my bike in the thread).

And here are the Large(I think)

Thanks for the info, Bill. Good food for thought. Good pix of your bike, too

I definitely want Easy Brackets as I do want to remove them to wash the bike and maintenance, so the overall width is something I'll have to keep in mind for sure.

Edge also have these bags:

http://www.edgeleather.com/Edge-Products/Edge-Rigid-Saddlebags/Model-108.html

The Speedmaster/America are on the fitment list for these bags.

Dimensions are: Length 20", Width 7 3/4", Height 11 1/2"

Since the front of these bags are not slanted, I'm wondering how these will work with the rear shocks.

Edge did say that you would send out a template of their bags so that we could try it on the bike.

Managed to pick up a set of the Edge 102 bags at my local dealer on sale 25% off (Christmas sale). They are a nice size (20"W X 7.5"D X 11.5"H)

http://www.edgeleather.com/Edge-Products/Edge-Rigid-Saddlebags/Model-102.html

I have Easy Brackets on order to mount them.

Does anybody know how far the Easy Brackets push the bags out from the fender stay? I'm trying to determine the clearance I need for the right hand shock.

Edge says they do fit the Speedmaster/America, but just making sure. The bottom/front of the bag would cover part of the rear shock.

Thanks,
H.

Fit up your easybracket and put a straightedge on the outside of the bracket. This is where your bag will be. Nice bags. Very nice.

H. they are nice looking bags. It looks like the Edge bags are more reinforced in the back so that they don't sag when on the easybrackets, which is a good feature.

Yes, every panel is reinforced. The back panel is made of a stronger material that the side panels. They are pretty strong. The bags are about the strongest I've seen so far for a soft bag. They are very well made. A choice of simulated leather called Tek (mine) or genuine leather can be selected.

Great looking bags. I don't care for the ones the dealer gave me as they don't lock and there is velcro on each side panel so I have to use 2 hands to get them open or closed. They're also throw overs and I don't like the leather rubbing on my rear fender. Will look into these. Can't wait to see them on your bike.

OK, this is the best I can do at the moment.

I just received our Easy Brackets yesterday, and put them on today. A very easy 10 minute install, complete with Never-Seize on the bolts, spacers, etc.

My wife agreed to help out here to see if the bags would clear the rear shocks. They do, by about 1/4" or maybe a little less than that. It's a bit hard to say if they will need a little spacer in behind the bags when there's some weight in the bags, but for now I'm confident in that they will clear. There's about 3/8" to 1/2" gap in front of the rear signal light.

So, we're happy with these.

When I get them properly mounted on the bike, I'll update this post with updated pictures.

The Edge bags have velcro on each side of the covers. Our K-Drive bags on our old bike also had velcro on the side flaps.

Looking good. Do they have snaps on the front and back? Are they the quick release? I don't find the quick release to be really important. I had saddleman bags on my HD and don't think I'll buy from them again. Just didn't think the quality matched the price.

Hi. No snaps, just velcro front and back flaps. The buckles are quick release and work well. The top lid is formed to fit over the bag. It's like a semi-hard bag.

Hi Folks. The bags have been installed today, and here's some pictures. I can't figure out how to delete the old links from my previous post.

[image][/image]

[image][/image]

[image][/image]

[image][/image]

The bags are on Easy Brackets. The bags clear the rear shocks by about 1/4" inch, and they are about 1/4" in front of the rear turn signals.

When I put in 11 lbs of weights in each bag, the bags straightened out a bit, and just touched the rear shocks. I will need to get 1/4" or so plexiglass to put between the bags and brackets.

Easy Brackets state that maximum weight on the docking posts is 15 lbs.

The Edge 102 bags weigh 6.2 lbs each empty sans brackets. Each bag and Easy Bracket weighs in at 8.6 lbs. This leaves 7.4 lbs to carry stuff in each bag. Yeah, right!

How much weight do people carry in their bags with Easy Brackets? It seems that 15 lbs as a maximum is a bit light. Thoughts?

Thx,
H.

I have to admit when I pack for a trip, my easy brackets are carrying more than 15 pounds. I've never had a problem but now I'm going to weigh my bags the next time I pack up and see what I'm really carrying.

I think the brackets and hardbags (old Harley) I have on my bike, mounted to easybracket posts, alone weight more than 15lbs. I have an extra bracket under the back of the fender for side-to-side stability but it's not load-bearing. Didn't want all that weight wobbling on the easybrackets.

Needless to say when they are loaded up with tools and such I'm WAY over the weight limit.

Thanks for the replies. Good to know that the 15 lb limit is conservative. I was thinking of upgrading the bolts to grade 8 steel or something, but if they're strong enough already, I won't bother then.

Thx,
H.

I carry fifteen to twenty Lbs. all the time with the tools and unsundry, that stayes in the bags. And I've put a fifty lb. bag of dog food over the fender resting on the top of the bags with no ill effect to the brackets. It makes my bags sag a little but they are cheep ones.

Hi Folks. Just an update on the installation of the Egde 102's and Easy Brackets on our Speedmaster. I did get a 1/4" thick piece of plexiglass from a local glass shop.

I trimmed to size using a jigsaw that was supported and clamped in place. Plexiglass is brittle and it can easily break. Jigsaw blade speed was fairly quick to minimize chipping. I used a combination wood/plastic fine-tooth blade. I took a file to the edges of the plexiglass to bevel the edges, and then used paint thinner to finish the edge.

[image][/image]

I used a drillpress to drill the 3/8" diameter mounting holes. Again, I made sure the plexiglass was clamped in position.

[image][/image]

There's now plenty of clearance by the shocks even with 11 lbs of weights in the bags.

[image][/image]

Note: these pictures show the bags UNLADEN. With 11 lbs in them, they still clear the shocks. They MIGHT touch the shocks over a bad bump, but it was quite a lot of force to get the bag to touch the shock with the weights inside.

[image][/image]

I am now quite pleased with the end result. Hopefully this will help someone out who wants a larger saddlebag on the Speedmaster/America.

H.

A very elegant solution!

I just placed my order for Easy Brackets from Fast Eddy. I am going to mod my large Triumph bags to accomodate the Brackets, and may end up with something along the lines of what you did. Thanks for posting!

Thanks! I'm glad to give back to the forum. I've certainly been learning lots from everyone here

The plexiglass spacer idea came directly from Easy Brackets themselves. They were very helpful.

I bought the brackets from Fast Eddy, and his service was top notch.

Hey Rodeo. We had K-Drive bags on our V-Star 650. They did very well for us. K-Drive has increased their pricing to the stratosphere in Canada ($800 for a set), so we went with the Edge bags and Easy Brackets and saved ourselves $300 CDN.

Regarding posting a pic, you need to host it on a site like Webshots, and link to the picture URL from here to display it. I think there's a how-to on this somewhere here.

I'd like to see a pic of them. You can PM me and I can put them up for you if you like.

Hi Folks. Well, being a bit safety minded, and riding at night, I figured that I'd put on some reflectors onto the saddlebags.

My Yamaha V-Star 950 has reflectors on the saddlebags from the factory, and the Edge bags are semi-hard shelled. So I picked up two of the Yamaha reflectors from a wrecker in new condition for $10 CDN. I like these reflectors as they have a stud on them, and a guide pin to maintain the alignment. No screws showing on the outside gives a nice clean look.
