Fun stuff Oh yeah and there was a guy in the class that started riding 2 years ago. He's 80!!!!!

I've dragged my floorboards at all different speeds, sometimes intentionally (in my office parking lot) and sometimes not. Much to my chagrin I discovered that the protective coupling nut came off on one side and I started dragging the actual floorboard. Doh!

I remember asking the crew, when they were in Daytona, "So how often do ya'll DROP the bikes praticing?" He said "at first, quite often" with a big grin. He suggested practicing on a dirt bike if possible, untill skills are acquired, and suggested installing crashbars on a cruiser, unless constant repairs to scuffs & dings are in your budget, as they are in theirs. He said "Don't kid yourself, we do drop our bikes" Food for thought.

Not sure what your point is. They dropped the bikes because they couldn't do the maneuvers properly. I've seen a total of two bikes dropped in two classes, with nary a detectable mark. Remember we're going really slow. These were dropped by students with zero practice, and just learning the techniques. I'm not sure why they would say "quite often". Besides, this course isn't done so you can go on tour showing you can do it, it's so you, can do it, when you need to.

The point was: If your gonna pratice slow speed maneuvers, DON'T THINK ITS NOT POSSIBLE TO DROP IT. How many members have posted the damages to their bikes by just dropping them while standing still? Broken turnsignals, clutch/brake levers, dented tanks, bent bars, scraped pipes, bent pipes, broken mirrors,cracked/scraped case covers, broken/sprained ankles, sprained wrists, etc, etc, etc. YES, practice slow speed maneuvers, the benefits out weigh the disadvantages, but don't think its not possible to damage your bike, and the costs that go with it. How much is a tank? Adding crash bars was their recommendation, believe it not not. I encourage ANYONE to do as I did, and ask them yourselves. They won't lie to you. Anyone here got a story to add?

Practicing high speed maneuvers can cause dropped bikes too. That's not what this thread "was" about. It was learning how to properly handle your bike.
No one here thinks a bike can't be damaged while riding it. Especially when learning new techniques.
However, you jumped in and made the point that it's possible to damage your bike by learning to ride properly while not going fast, or without even riding it.
Good job!

No, I just shared a conversation I had with Jerry, and wanted to "pass on" HIS advice to consider using a bike that won't make your head explode "when" you drop it (if your REALLY practicing pushing your limits) making really tight turns at very low speeds, as they emphasize is MUCH harder to do than at higher speeds, and therefore more likely to happen, or covering your a55 by installing crash bars. Hopefully, someone will heed this advise, and be grateful they thought about it before instead of after. But NOOOO! Its your thread and its all about you, ain't it? but, knowing full good and well you won't drop the subject, let me apologize to you in advance, as you seem to think I hi-jacked your thread.

Give it a rest man your acting like a child, and like you're the only one with a brain.
If you watch any the videos, read any the books, or take the class, or even sign up for the class, they go into detail about what can happen, what usually happens, and what to do to prevent it. I for one have spoken to Jerry, and communicated with him in emails. The instructor that teaches here is a motor officer and he and Jerry are friends. Oddly neither of them ever mention riding something other than the bike you have and intend to ride, unless you have less than 1000 miles actual riding experience. They won't even let you take the course until that point. However if you to worry some more or feel the need to discuss the dangers of motorcycle riding whether it be slow, fast, or standing still in your driveway, hey, start a thread about that.
I'm done with this thread. Sleep well knowing you have done your duty, I know I will.

I have been riding since age 16 and I learned a lot at the MSF course I took a year or so ago.
I learned how to turn inside a parking space and do a figure 8 inside a insanely small space. I never thought I could do it but it did. Ya gotta look where you want to go and your body will make it happen. If you look at the front wheel you will fall and go boom.
If you look where you want to go the bike will take you there. I do not know why but it will.

It's called "Target Fixation", Dan. One tends to drive/ride toward any focused-upon point ahead of them. It's similar as in situations where you spot a pothole ahead of you and continue to focus upon it while thinking you must avoid it, but then find you're strangely "attracted" to it and ultimately find yourself rolling over it.
But, this phenom can of course also be used in a positive manner, such as the situation you described with your figure-8 exercise, or when riding around a twisty road and remembering to keep your head turned and somewhat craned up and focusing your sight as far up around the turn as you can see, which as you said will automatically(and in a way, "magically") have you and your bike making sharper turns, and with much less a chance of "going wide".
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Yeah, I can vouch for this phenomenon. I did it the hard way on a bicycle when I was a kid, riding a raised path through a swamp and saw a moccasin . Paid more attention to the snake than the path and rode right off the path - then fell on top of the ****** snake. Yep - he got me.
I don't do that anymore.

Well, there ya go guys! Literal AND positive proof confirming the ol' saw..."Once Bitten, Twice Shy"...at least about the dire consequences of Target Fixation sometimes, anyway!!! (..and ahh...glad to hear "you don't do that anymore", Steve!)

Oh now really...
That's quite the assumption Of the alleged herb consumption Of what might be perceived as The nasty killer weed.
It's really quite the matter And although I'm not a hatter I wear the hat of many Like Peter, Paul and Mary
We all enjoy the magic And although it's not so tragic We perceive the paranormal While the rest dress up in formal
I resist the hype, the story And it's really very boring That the wackiest tobaccy Leads to riding Kawasaki
Nope... I still ride upon Triumph And that says I am defiant Reasons that make a difference Well at least I'm not indifference
You know I see beyond the corner I ride the ride of one, the loner And I look to the horizon I am the one, I am the wise one
So try not to include me In the many who exclude me I am one among the others We are one, we are brothers
I ride a bike, I push the concept And It's part of what I do best And I'll be d.mned if I become The doing of my undone
The doing of my undone
(Written under the influence of life... yeah!)
Live to love, love to live.

Okay Keith, I suppose I buy the general premise of that! THOUGH, for some strange reason that "Peter, Paul and Mary" line o' yours above NOW has me thinking of "Puff, The Magic Dragon"!!! (...and so, forgive me here, but now I ALSO have to say I'm maybe not TOTALLY buyin' into the WHOLE premise that ALL of the above was strictly and solely written under the influence of "life" alone, ol' buddy!!!)

Your writing above, Keith, reminded me of when a couple pals and myself would often hang out and get wacked on whatever we we had at the time. At some point in the evening, someone would write a verse and we would end up passing the pen to create a single piece. Those were some good times and we wrote some of the wierdest crap.
