Do any of you know of a good rattle can flat black that I can use to paint my idiot light/tach cover that would be resistant to gas and oil? maybe a good engine block paint or something?

I used the krylon satin black plastic paint on my dash and its withstanded many gallons of gasoline on more than a few occasions. I think I painted it 2-3 years ago and I have one small chip around the mounting bolt.

Just make sure you rough up the chrome a bit with a fine grit sandpaper, wash it down with soap and water....and throw the whole can on it in even light coats.

A lot of guys on the v star 650 forum I frequent have had great success with a product available from John Deere shops called Blitz Black. It is a flat black, sprays on smooth and even, and is very resistant to gas. Couple of guys have their tanks/fenders painted with good results and swear by it.

I used tractor rattle can paint on my whole bike. Its pretty bullet proof. I can managed to ding it a few times doing dumb things, touch it up with a sharpie marker. Works great.

Thanks guys. I'll give the satin black for plastic a try. Ther price is right and I can get it right down the street. BTW I tried the PJ1 fast black exhaust paint on some plastic, let it cure over night, and it came right off with some gas. So that one's a no-go.
