Two weeks ago we had an record breaking early season cold snap, dropping to single digits fahrenheit, who knows what in celsius .

The broadleaf trees (cottonwood, maple, aspen etc) hadn't yet started to "turn". The upshot is we have gone sraight from green to dead brown. No brilliant yellows and reds. It's a colourless landscape for us this year. The question now is "Will these leaves fall normally, or hang around and slowly drop like dead flies throughout the pending winter?"

Sorry to hear no color for you all. Plenty of color here plenty of green and still some roses on the bush red and yellow. It was a cold 80 here today.

No colour, eh? Pretty much the same here John... add that to the fact that caterpillars chewed all the leaves to oblivion during summer which is in part why we have no colour this year. But the larch (tamarack) needles are still turning yellow as per usual.

Whitt, Take a ride to the upstate. The lower elevations are just starting and the higher mountains are peaking. Sunday should be awesome!!!

Hey John..."consistency" now!!! Where's that "consistency" you were just talkin' about around here very recently???

I mean, here's the deal, amigo...

In this little complaint of yours here about how you felt you got short-changed in your autumnal visual pleasures up there this year, you CLEARLY made mention of the temperature in the "fahrenheit" scale, and THEN go on to say you didn't know what this particular temperature would be in "celsius"...RIGHT?!!

Okay then, let's see here...

I think the ONLY country which still uses the fahrenheit scale is the Good Ol' U.S. of A...RIGHT?!!

AND, as I recall...IN said Good Ol' U.S. of A...we DON'T spell words like "COLOR" with that YOU-KNOW-WHAT...Dude!!!!

(but aah, to get back on topic here...sorry to hear your Fall up there didn't live up to your expectations, ol' buddy!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight... ya gotta realize our Freedom John is a very complex multidimensional dude with a far reaching and all encompassing psyche. I noticed that right away when he came up here and referred to Nelson as a bohemian town and started ordering 'hippie' beer. This is a guy who morphs into any situation and blends in as though he's always been there. So I think the colo(u)r thing was a gesture to many of the rest of us here members to make us feel comfortable... like we all belong, 'u' or no 'u'. That's all!

But John, for the sake of a bit of colour to make you feel better... here's a repost of a pic I took just a couple o' weeks ago. Cardinal red on red!! Mmmm, mmmm!!

Thanks Keith,

I figured you'd get it. One theory I heard this past week, whilst carpooling up the Clark Fork River valley towards Bozo-man was the sudden cold circumvented the seasonal formation of the abscission layer in the leaf stem, which in turn circumvented the unmasking of the red/yellow pigments that have been hiding behind green chlorophyll all year.

The other conversation had to do with who had the best pie & coffee between Missoula and Bozo-man?

Nice picture, Cardinal Red

Well Keith...I think the ONLY thing that made ANY sense at ALL there IS that AT LEAST you have the good sense AND the good taste to ride a CARDINAL RED (in COLOR) BA there, dude!!!

(other than THAT?!...eeeh!!!)

Yeah..."Whilst"!!!

Ya know Keith, the MORE I think about this, the more I'm convinced that John is REALLY some kind'a agent with MI5, and he's been sent by Her Majesty to infiltrate the yonder regions of Montana in hopes that he can start some kind'a counter-revolutionary action up there that will sweep through this great country of ours..err..I mean MINE here not yours, and that this action will eventually cause our...err..sorry, MY country to fall back under control of those folks over there where they make these motorcycles we like so much!!!(and BTW, that's "motorcycle", NOT "motorBIKE"!!!)

BUT, even MORE insidious than THAT is that once that happens, those folks over there will make us all start havin' to use those darn superfluous "u"s and weird stuff like that "whilst" word once again, just LIKE you poor devils up there in Canada evidently still do!!!

(yep...the more I think about this, the more this ALL is starting to make a whole lot o' sense, alright!!!)

Well John, you know it really doesn't matter what kind of shape your face WAS in or IS in presently, ya know!

Nope, 'cuz ya see...when a guy has that ability to turn on that good ol' "simple-minded country boy" routine of his any ol' time he wants, and can use it to "charm them birds out of the trees" (and maybe even use it on a few graveyard-shift nurses now and then too), then his looks really don't mean a whole heck of a lot afterall, now do they?!
