What is the purpose of the strap that goes across the pillion? I seem I am constantly having to put it back in place. I will probably just remove it. But, I was just thinking of why it is there, history or purpose wise.

Yep! Go ahead and remove it if you'd like. It's pretty much a useless item that supposed to be some kind of strap for the passenger to hold.

My wife likes having the strap. When I'm riding alone, I put my cap under it. Stick the visor in from the front and it can't come out riding.

You can also stick the bill in the back of your pants which is what I do when my wife is riding and I can't use the strap.
