This past weekend four fellow bikers and I completed a Bun Burner (1500 miles in 36 hours). Our journey took us from Chesapeake, VA down to Cape Canaveral, FL and back. We began at 6am Saturday morning and returned at 4:37pm Sunday afternoon. A really good ride and I'm sore a all get out. The weather was something else. Never in my life did I think it was possible to experience all four seasons in that short a period of time, but we did. From hot to rain to cold to everything in between, including some of the BEST lightning storms I've ever see in central FL. Being the beginning of Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach, we obviously saw tons of bikes on the road heading south. Unfortunately, most of them were in trailors. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think I'll ever accept the idea of hauling your horse to a rally. Anyway, it was a great ride overall. We stopped at the GA Welcome Center on the GA/FL line and caught a few hours sleep and rode on. I was a tough guy and didn't bring my iPod for fear of rain. FYI, there are only so many conversations that can go through one's head before self-insanity begins creeping in. This was my second Iron Butt; I did a SaddleSore back in May (1000 miles in 24 hours). Between the two, I have learned (hopefully) what I need for myself and my America to make the next one(s) a better ride. Yeah, my buddies and I are looking at doing at least 2 more: 2000 miles in 48 hours and a coast-to-coast in 50 hours. Today is clean up for the bike and gear. Afterwards get all the necessary paperwork in order and ready to be mailed to the Iron Butt Association for review and approval. One more patch for the jacket and one more certificate for the wall. Ride on!

Right on! Congrats! I'm starting to plan my next Iron Butt ride ride for next year.

You got that right! One guy I met at a rally said that he turned back and got in his car because it looked like it might rain!!!
As for the Iron Butt WOW! That's an average of 42 miles an hour without sleep, fuel stops (bike and rider) etc.
I must do one of these sometime soon.

I'm thinking about doing the SaddleSore early next year, I live in south GA so it would be during warm months of the year (heck it seems all the months are warm here), any suggestions for preparation? I had planned on riding down one side of Florida and up the other side.
'06 America, Raask foot controls, the bike use to be Graphite and Silver, now its Red and Black.

I hear about collisions on many group rides, but I have to wonder what effect the fatigue of such a long group ride does to folks. I want to go on one of the shorter Ironbutt rides one day, but am weary of riding in a group of fatigued riders.

Well, an excellent way to prepare is to set in a firm chair for a Twilight Zone marathon on SciFi ....it works... makes ya want to ride !

We found riding in a group is actually a lot better. With numbers, you can keep check on each other. I generally ride the tail of a group and I was not afraid to head up to the front and pull the group over to rest once I noticed fatigue setting in on some of the group. Everyone's a bit different. I would be afraid riding solo one might want to tough it out. Bad things happen at that point.
Additionally, we held a safety brief prior to rolling out: speeds, fatigue, weather conditions. None of us were afraid of pulling the whole group over if something wasn't right.

Bruce, the biggest thing is knowing what you and your bike is capable of and comfortable with. Quality rain gear is MAJOR. Nothing sucks more than going through the rain when you know you're on the clock. Trust me, did it twice and sucked both times...lol. Advil, or whatever pain reliever you're used to, needs to be kept handy and don't wait. Pop one right off and again when directed. Stay well hydrated and fed...bottle of water/juice and a healthy snack each gas stop.
