well i got my filter kit to remove the airbox is there a way to do it without raising the bike up and dropping the rea wheel?
05 thruxton 904, still looking for carbs

Not really. You don't need to drop the rear tire off, but you need to have the bike suspended, such that the rear tire is off the ground. Then you can unbolt the rear fender, lower it from the fender rails and kind of slide it back over the tire. Then the airbox comes out under the frame cross rail and over the rear tire. Of course, if you don't mind destroying the airbox, you can probably dremel the thing into manageable chunks and remove it piecemeal from the bike.

It can be done, but it involves breaking the airbox up into small pieces.

You can remove the airbox in one pc by taking the shocks off at the top mount pins and jacking the bike up to let the swing arm drop as far as it can. You do not need to remove the tire or the fender.

Listen to larryshep: Jack, remove shocks, then you have tons of room to work, easy as pie then. I wish I thought of that when I did mine. Live and learn. That's how we get to the rear bolts for the airbox now for the jetting jobs too. Way way easier and less frustrating.

really !? I had no idea. I've wanted to remove it just to get at that restrictor plate. now maybe i'll have to do that. Speaking of which, anyone have any opinions on how much the restrictor, er, restricts? I have a UNI with snorkel removed and airbox drilled. So theres plenty of air coing into the filter, but i feel as tho once it gets thru the filter the restrictor only allows so much flow. And judging by how much i gained in snorkel removal i felt the drilling of the AB didn't gain an equal amount (rejetting all the while of course) which lead me to believe i'd gotten to the point where the restrictor would't allow any more flow. Any thoughts on that and whether restrictor removal is worthwhile?

I agree with that too but I would recommend removing your pipes because you can dent them. Remove your shocks and jack it slowly and you will see that the rear of the swingarm wants to contact the pipes...

I think I remember someone saying they got into their aibox thru the filter opening with a dremel and just make the holes in the plate bigger, or at least connected them to make one big hole...

I think that would be suisidal ! Drilling the airbox was bad enough as far as plastic shavings and dust, but at least you could clean them out. If you dremeled the plate a ton of plastic dust would be in there on the OTHER side of the plate where you couldn't get to it to clean it up and the first time you start the bike it would suck in a 1/2 pound of plastic dust ! It took me a good while to completely remove every spec of dust and shavings when i drilled the airbox and finished widening it with the dremel.but at least it was all on the filter side of the plate where i COULD get to it. So dremeling the plate would not be wise to say the least unless you're willing to remove the carbs to clean the mess, and i assume that wouldn't be much easier than removing the airbox and then the plate.

larryshep, A dumb question..... If you take the shocks off at the top mounts and then remove the 2 bolts going through the fender into the back of the airbox, what's holding the fender on?? It's been a long time since I removed those 2 bolts to slide the airbox back to remove the carbs for rejetting, so I'm just asking.... It's too cold out there in the garage to go look...

The rear fend is attached to the chrome rail on eaither side of the fender (where the "easy bracket pins" are attached).

I checked this morning. I see the frame extends back on both sides to catch the fender at the shock mount and the first bolt in the chrome rail..... I told you it was a dumb question.....

You have a 2005 Speedmaster, right? AFAIK the Speedmasters don't have removeable restrictor plates like the standard Bonnies and the Americas. At least my 2003 Speedmaster doesn't.

yes, 05'. There IS a restrictor, but i assume you mean it's molded in? I't doesn't seem to be tho i may be wrong. But one thing i do know is that there are a lot of minor changes to the 05's over the older ones, so it may be removable. For example some or all older ones have internal snorkels which mine doesn't. I'll check it next time i'm in there and see if i can feel the edges of the plate and whether it's a molded part of the AB or not.
On a side note, can anyone say whether restrictor plate removal gave them much of a gain or not? (with any necassary jetting or course) I hear people mention it, but unlike snorkel removal i never hear them make any claims about whether or not it was beneficial and how much.
