A while back, there was a long thread on here about idiots parking their cars in handicapped and no parking zones in front of the store. Yesterday, as I was going into the grocery store, there was the usual car parked right out in front of the doors, with two young people in it. I don't usually say anything, but this time I was being a little cranky, and as I walked by, I talked loud enough to myself that they would hear it..."Huh, I wonder what that sign means, NO PARKING-FIRE LANE?" As I figured, the passenger just laughed, and made some kind of comment to her friend, "yeah, that's right.....etc." When I came out ten minutes later, they were still there, but I just went on by. I wanted to tell them they were idiots, but you know how it is, ya just want to go home to eat without raising your blood pressure. Later, I thought about it, and called the local police station, and asked the dispatcher, "If someone called about this on a cell phone, would a cop show up to make them move or give them a ticket?" She said, "sure, as long as there wasn't something more important." But then I thought, am I being a bigger jerk than they are by calling the cops? I don't want to be an a$$, but these people really tick me off. And there is a real potential for an accident here, as small children can't be seen leaving the store doorway with a car or two in front of it. What say you, O Wise Ones of the Board? Call or no?

If the car was unattended, I say call the cops.
I probably would have let them know just what you said about the children an others view being blocked and told them who's responsibility it would be if someone gets hurt.

Keep a cane with you and stand by theirs waiting for them to move so you can park ;-)

When I see someone parking in the handicap parking I say, in a loud enough voice for them to hear, "It must be a mental handicap." I have received quite a variety of looks.

Best thing I ever saw was when firemen broke the windows out of a high priced import car and ran a hose through it when it was parked by a fireplug. Next best was when some idiot was parked on the line between 2 parking places. When I came out of the market, there were 2 of the really small older Honda cars parked in the 2 spaces inches from the doors of the first car.

You could always stand right in front of their car and pretend to call the police on your cell phone. "Yes officer, I'm standing right in front of their car. They are young and obviously not handicapped. See you in a few minutes. Oh license plate number? It's ..."

I figure that technically, it's not "parked" unless they get out of the car...otherwise it's just stopped, and i personally see no harm in it. I do occasionally park my bike on the sidewalk at Wally World...and a few other stores, but i don't leave it where it'll be in the way, and nobody has seemed to mind. Am i the only one?

yeah man I hate people that call the cops for every little thing as much as I hate young ignorant kids being stupid.
If theres a lesson for them to learn, they'll learn it one day. A cranky sign follower with his finger on the button isnt gonna help. Dont be that guy.
You wouldnt like it if every Tom Dick and Harry called the cops on you when youre riding a bit over the speed limit.
If you were running out of that burning building and they were in your way it'd be a totally different story.

I cant see how the cops could do anything. As mentioned above, it says NO PARKING. It doesn't say NO STANDING. Never really thought about it but I can see your point about it increasing the chance of a accident. With that being said, I think your anger would be better directed towards the car that is barreling through the cross walk. I had one come so close to the me and the girlfriend on a crosswalk that I punched the side of his car. For some reason the guy STILL didnt slow down.

Rich, I know what you mean about the idiots parking the cars. Last week, my wife had to go to the store with our 5 month old son. When she came out, some idiot parked so close to her driver side(literally inches) that she had to go to the other side of the car to crawl across the front seat of her Ford Escape. It was so bad that people were making comments as they went by saying things like..."I would go in and have that person paged so they have to move their car", etc...you get the point. When I heard of it, I got so upset myself b/c it was just another person thinking only of themself and not worried about inconveniencing someone else. Oh well.

Come on Rich! Don't be so darn hard on those kids! They could've had a VERY "legitimate reason" for stoppin' in that "fire lane" and right in front of that grocery store's doorway, OR at least they might've THOUGHT they did anyway! Yep, you see, maybe in THEIR minds the term "fire lane" could've meant that that's where they were SUPPOSED TO STOP, and where they were allowed to "fire off" a few shots from their getaway car!!! (GEEEZ...I gotta say that some of you guys around here just never wanna seem to give the benefit of the doubt to people or their motives out there anymore, DO YA???!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
