My fellow officers and myself's attention has been brought to the waving procedure.
We are extremley worried re it's dangerous content first the most important is safety , Waving is extremley dangerous and should be stopped immediatly, firstly the rider or driver does not have full control over his vehicle when waving or saluting, secondly if looking towards the person waving the riders/drivers full attention is not being paid to the road & traffic conditions, this is in the same sphere as useing Mobile phones hands off or on. and worse still Sat Navs devices.Remember the customory military style salute from AA patrols was stopped for some of the above reasons. Also members of the Armed Forces were stopped on the same grounds of when driving or riding, passing an Officer one does not salute but carries out a smart eyes right or left as the case maybe.
Our colleagues down the road at English Heritage have also forwarded this memo.
Please be advised that English Heritage take a very dim view of the act of waving. This is a foreign example of human emotion, soon it will be seen as the norm, leading to such things of cuddling or whats more kissing in public very anti English. Waving in England should only be carried out.
1, when troops are being dispatched to sort out some other countries problem.
2/ when children are dispatched from towns, who maybe be in immediate danger.
No tears should be shown on these occasions another softee foreign trait, the Stiff Upper Lip should be firmly clamped by the lower jaw.
If on special dispensation the Local Chief Constable has been seen fit to permit waving it should be carried out in a dignified way ie: as the Royal Wave!
Let this be an end to the matter of actually waving.

Ok, Stephen, you need to put me straight...if I take my TBA overseas to Ireland, England, and Europe...are you saying people don't wave and are discouraged to do so?  Also, here in the states, I've waved to multiple military personnel, on base, without any repercussions from the SPs. In fact the only time I had a run-in with the SPs was when a Lt. Commander cut me off, on base, and I gave him the "WHAT FOR!"  He was cited for disobeying a posted traffic sign!

Now im not big on the waving thing....i will wave if waved at 1st. but i think there needs to be a mass unbunching of the panties with NIbiker and friends

I read an article in a recent rag discussing the 'wave' issue and how the 'wave' is percieved and nearly totally disregarded in much of Europe - Primary focus was Germany. Anyway, after reading the article, and noticing the ever increasing lack of 'wave sharing' from brand loyal asshats, I decided to minimize my personal enthusiasm. After nearly 2 months, I am nearly 'wave free' - And I did it without the patch!

yeah I dont wave very often, but this is an uptight stance about the issue.
I'm pretty sure that the military stopped the saluting for liability issues. Its a bit unfair to make a soldier risk an accident because he has a responsibilty at all costs to do so. Riding with one hand doesnt mean certain death, nor should it be an all conditions riding position either.

I wave when waved at except at times I need to be downshifting, holding the clutch sitting, or anytime I feel it's not safe. I still nod or make some acknowledgment if I can. Common sense should rule. Nothing wrong with waving as long as in a safe situation.
Sport bike riders seem to have a lot more free use of their left hand. That's why it's usually resting on their left hip.

And I ain't perfect. If I see a female around, my eyes are definitly off the road for a second or two.

oh lord, common sense has left the building...if someone is to afraid to let go of the handle bars with 1 hand for 3 seconds, for fear of spinning wildly out of control and and crashing into a bus load of nuns sending them into a fuel tanker, and in turn sending that into a hospital full of kids and exploding on impact, killing all involved, then maybe we should not wave, we will all be safe then...

Well, since "Will" is a diminutive of "William", as is "Bill", I must be qualified to answer.
"Cease" is a diminutive of "Caesar" Or "Cesar" in Español.
And, of course as you should well know, waving to the wrong Cesar can be interpreted as a gang sign and he will gather up all his vatos locos and come after you.

Nicely done, NI, tongue firmly planted-in-cheek. When I was working - did I mention I am retired? - as a Big Boss, my men waved to me each and every morning as I drove into the plant; sometimes they even used all five fingers. I of course waved back with the customary twin fingers thrust upward accompanied by the bladder-like lip and tongue buzzer, and thus the workday was begun. Waving can be such jolly fun.

anybody that cant ride one handed shouldnt be rideing at all. in a curve or while makeing a turn ok i understand but when you are running the road why not??? what am i supposed to do when i see a fellow B.A. COM member?? you know, do i give the secret B.A wave or what ??????

I always thought that it didn't catch on in the UK and some other places because they are passing each other throttle side to throttle side so that if you did that super cool brand name rider hang your arm down thing no one could see it.

I never thought about the wave thing as it pertains to riding on the 'other' side in the UK and other parts. Yeah... the classic drop-arm wave wouldn't really work there.
But ya know... I kinda groove on the wave thing. Just gives me a down home, warm fuzzy sort of feeling... especially if coming from a gal! Yup.... gotta like it!!

Yep! Uh huh! And soooooo I suppose we could just add THIS example to that looooong list of reasons as to why driving/riding on the left side of the road is just flat wroooooong, alright!!!! (yep...ya see, in THIS CASE it's seems to have inhibited the very concepts of friendliness, comaraderie AND a certain "esprit de corps" between the many motorcyclist on that li'l island o' theirs all these many years!!!

Since you fellows drive on the other side of the road, I imagine you could have some trouble taking your hand off the throttle to wave.... We don't have that problem here.  As to taking your eyes off the road.... what's the big deal. You take your eyes off the road when you look at your speedo, dash, tach, idiot lights, girls, guys, traffic lights, rear view mirrors....hmmmmm

Hmmmmmm.. What's going on here????? I've been riding and waving for 44 years... Never lost control.. I've noticed people of "ALL" brands wave more now than they did 44 years ago.. I'm a sledder and we have hand signals that we use for keeping one another informed while cornering etc... As of late some company has come up with little lights that mount on the bars so you don't need to remove ones hand to signal your intent... Call me old fashion.... Give me the old hand signal and a hardy wave any time you like....... MMV.

Well DANG , man , what's up here ? WAVING regulation ???? Down here in the South we don't really have a stiff upper lip , 'cause I think all the grease from the FRIED stuff we like has sorta LUBED it up some , but man , we WAVE at everything . We even wave at the flagman that holds up traffic with that stop sign on a stick . When I ride , I WAVE at HORSES , DOGS , (but not cows , 'cause they're stupid) . Sometimes we WAVE with BOTH hands , Now how irresponsible is that ???  Yeah , kinda like this guy here :

Well said, Wade! I’m the same way. I always get a wave from the flagmen after I initiate it. Plus, some of those flagWOMEN are pretty cute!  You forgot to mention: Old people on porches, and kids riding bicycles. The kids seem to get the biggest kick out of the wave.

I've said this before on here, but, My favorite is to wave to a little kid riding next to me in a car. They get the biggest charge out of it, mom or dad looks nervous, and I figure I'm encouraging the future biker!

Good point there! But then again... fighting fire with gasoline is within the realm of reason, especially given the breadth of cerebral resources evident around here.
But all of this is pretty much OT. Getting back to the origins of this thread... like you I still don't know who Cease or Caesar is and why waving to him is such a problem. Or was the author a bit dyslexic and really meant to say 'Cease to Wave.' Now that would kinda explain things a bit better.

Well, as Wade often says, "wit is an indication of intellect" or something to that effect. So, one could say that the ability to appreciate wit is also an indication of intellect. Then it would also follow that the inability to appreciate wit is..........weelll.......  (Too subtle??)

Aaaaahhh, but it was the dyslexia thing I was focusing on... ya know? If not dyslexia then a Yoda sort of thing with the object, subject verb set up in a different order. So where we typically have "I am hungry" we now have "hungry I am."
Soooo... I was kinda going there with this 'Waving to Cease' thing... ya know? And in the context of Stephen's original post maybe he'd had a wee nip or twoooo and got the words twisted around and really meant 'Ceasing to Wave.' Like he'd had enough of Harley induced snobbery and just thought it better to STOP WAVING!
