Agreed. If you feel the uncontrollable need for speed, buy another bike. The America's great, stoplight to stoplight (without the fear of wheelies) and cruising the open road. Fastest, ever, for me, was on a 2001 GSX-R 1000. I was in North Texas for some AF training and my buddy let me ride his new GSX-R. That thing was still pulling at 160mph, before I throttled back...NO THANK YOU! His words of warning were simple: "Don't crack the throttle, unless you want to do a wheelie." (I was vewy vewy careful..)

i personally hate when people say buy another bike. yes these are not fast, but you can make them pretty quick. i for one enjoy improving on something, and if you like these bikes why not. there are plenty of guys with bonnies who have made them move along just fine.

The Salt Flats record for a bone stock 06 Thruxton with TORs is 111.372 MPH. I don't think a stock America/Speedy will run much over 100 MPH actual speed.

Um, Colespeed might disagree... 2006 Speedmaster - 111.101 mph on the Salt Flats (flatsides and drilled TORs, no big bore) http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...ge=0#Post416766What do you suppose he would've done with a K&N and dyno-tuned stock carbs?

Thanks for the link, very nice Speedy. But, 42 mm Mikunie flat sides aren't stock. I really like the M bars. Colespeed's 111+ MPH is impressive. All well tuned Bonnie varients will do the Ton+, but the ride sucks for any length of time.

Thanks for the pic, I assume that's Colespeed. He obvious has great taste in headwear, leather jackets and motorcycles.

Ummm, on my Speedy, about 113 MPH..... On my Blackbird, well add 60 to that, and still had throttle left ( blackbird supposed to be good for 186 stock )

GPS accuracy would depend on how many satellites you're getting your info from, as well as the accuracy of your GPS. You normally have 5-7 providing input to your unit (did that sound as bad as I thought it did?). I think it's all factored in. Bob

Yeah but I don't think they factor in variation in elevation (hills).

I have had my speedo buried but not sure what the actual speed would have been. Maybe 120 mph maybe a little less, don't remember how much it had left if any since I let off the throttle there and was more interested in the road than the tach.

On a long and empty of stretch of US 93 between Vegas and Alamo I tried to max out my Speedmaster. I had the GPS unit on and it registered 103 MPH as the max speed and my speedometer showed over 110 and close to 115 when sanity prevailed and I got off the throttle.
Anything over 85 MPH on my bike is nasty. I can cruise at 60 to 70 MPH all day long and enjoy the ride and scenery. Closer to 60 is where the bike seems to want to ride the best. It is smooth and a joy to ride all day at that speed. Above 70 I feel that I am aiming the bike and I lose the joy of riding. So why push it? It is for fun and I am not out to impress anyone.

+1 Dan, My Speedy has a 42 rear cog and a 18 front cog. It runs fantastic at any speed up to about 70 mph (our max legal limit is 66 mph.), over that and I don't enjoy the ride. On another note I have had my Speedy up to 155 kph on the clock, saw sense and backed off. Didn't want to be a statistic.

Well a couple of weeks ago I found a long slightly uphill straight out in the country (north of Kyogle) and wound her out. She got to 175kph very rapidly and more slowly on up to 180kph (112mph) on the speedo - the tach read 6000 revs at 180kph. She was only increasing speed very slowly from there so I didn't push her further. I had a full load of luggage on BTW. Later the GPS showed it to be 165kph (102mph) She felt stable and controlled at that speed. I think I would have got a fair bit more had I not been carrying a lot of extra weight (basically an extra 40 kilos) - because I still had 1900 revs of headroom.

The "theorethical" top speed of the stock 865 engine at Max Power RPM (6,750) with a 42/18 is around 192kph/120mph, with a 42/17 around 182kph/113mph, and for all you speed freaks running 42/19 you just hit 200kph/125mph. I knew ther was another reason I liked the 19 tooth sprocket...

Probably 80 mph. I don't see much point, for myself, in going any faster. It's OK for those who like faster, but I don't need it.

I took mine up to an indicated 100 mph a few weeks ago, while I had my GPS mounted. I was curious as what my GPS registered and was shocked when I opened that feature and found.............549 mph.
Than, I remembered that I used the GPS to play MP3's while on a Southwest flight to Floriday this spring. At some point it must have picked up a satellite. Apparently we were motoring long at a fine rate of speed.

I'd just go with the 549mph and say your speedo's a little out.
