Some time ago I read a post in which someone mentioned a Triumph dealership near them closing. Since I have not yet purchased my Triumph I decided to take yet another methodical step toward deciding on buying one.
Of course, in full disclosure I’ve been out of work for over three months and had to drop out of Grad school, so I couldn’t get a new bike in the barn if one were offered to me for $500 at present.
I went to Triumph’s web site and searched dealerships near me in the event that I required service that could not be performed by myself or at a local shop. As it stands the closest shop is nearly fifty miles from my house. Beyond that, I have three shops under 70 miles from my house, and three more at just over 100 miles.
Hauling a bike for anywhere from an hour to two and a half hours for repairs is not optimal but, I suppose is acceptable.
How far is the trip to one or more Triumph shops for you folks?

I have one about 15 miles from me that will not get my business for service work, and another that is about 35 miles from me that gets about 98% of all my business. The one that's farther away is a Triumph only shop, the other one has about 6 different brands of bikes.
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

An hour's not bad at all - closest Triumph shop (ha!) is 1 1/2 hours and any Harley shop's at least an hour from us .

Almost the exact same situation here... Shop 1: only a few miles from my door to theirs. Multi brand shop. I bought both mine and Karens bikes there. Service dept will never get my business. Shop 2: Big box, multi brand...NEVER! NOTHING! NO HOW! Shop 3: about 30-40 miles from me....they get every penny I can throw at them. They are Triumph only but trying to pic up a certain Italian brand. Shop 4: about 100 miles north, Triumph only....if I was close they would be like my shop 3. Next dealer is in Oregon...a couple hundred miles form me. If all shops 1,2,3 and 4 ceased to exist...then Id happily ride my bike to them for service.

takes me just over an hr to get to my dealer. Been going to that dealer for many years now though. Hermy started selling Triumph in the late 50s if I remember right and has been doing work and selling parts ever since. Herm's son Hermy Jr. has the business now and has always treated me very well. Even if there was a closer dealer I would still give Herm my business.

Hey there son... if I want a 'Triumph' guy I gotta go 4 hours from here and then some. But hey... that is not a factor really. They could be 3000 miles away and no matter. I ride a Triumph for reasons that have nothing to do with the closest dealership. WTF? Buy it, ride it, enjoy it and forget about dealerships!!! They do not enter into the equation (for me)... I ride a Triumph because I LIKE 'EM.... not because some tail starved Triumph bolt buster hangs at some stealership nearby. Get on with in I say. You either want one or you don't.

If I have to go to a Triumph dealership it is about an hour away, but there is a motorcycle repair shop who specailizes in British bikes that is only 20 minutes away and I trust him more.
'06 America, Raask foot controls, the bike use to be Graphite and Silver, now its Red and Black.

2 under 35 miles . both give free tea coffee plus burgerbar. alot of riders call in while out for a ride. If IF you need some work doing and you have to leave the bike. might be a pain the distance you have to go. as you would need a couple of lifts to get there and back . Once was going to have a 1+ hr tune they said bring licence and take any bike for a test ride while they worked on it . but if you find a good local mechanic and your bike's not under warrantee use them if your far away. But still get a trumpet what ever the distance matey

My dealer is over 40 miles away and takes over an hour to get there due to traffic. In the 4+ years I've had the bike, I've only left it there 2 or 3 times and they do all the service (so far). I usually make an appointment, get there when they open and wait on the bike and drive it home. I'd much rather do that than trailer it over and leave as I'd also have to go back and get it.

2 hours for my dealer. 5 hours for a good dealer. But I hear there's a guy locally who's a really good mechanic. I just generally do everything myself (which is the problem, half the time). I get tires locally.

Well let me see if I can explain this. Number one read the quote from my original post.
Quote:
I went to Triumph’s web site and searched dealerships near me in the event that I required service that could not be performed by myself or at a local shop.
The local shop that I use said that he has never worked on a Triumph. I don’t know about you but I am not a licensed mechanic, nor do I have the funds to air ship a bike for repairs and having a motorcycle sized paper weight in my yard is not what I want when making a purchase.

I think all of the dealerships in NC are multibrand, and I haven't found a shop that knows jack about British bikes near me. Would a multibrand dealership be a bad idea as far as having work done on the bike?

My favorite Triumph shop is only about 10 miles from me, and so it "only" takes me about an hour and a half to get to it! Well....this IS L.A., ya know!!! Naaaaw, just kiddin'. Ya see, we can lane-split out here, ya know. And sooooooo, it REALLY only takes me all of about 25 minutes to get to South Bay Triumph even in the worst of traffic.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

You'd air ship your bike 50 miles if you had the money? Okay, NOW I see your dilemma.

I am smack dab in the middle of a "Triumph Zero Zone". In all four directions, about three hours plus away! However, my local small shop is only an hour away, and has a good mechanic, and is the "old fashioned" kind of dealer, pull up a chair and lets talk about your problem, kinda slow on some days. I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Closest is about 16 miles now, was 2 miles before I moved. Three more within 100 miles. But then again, the closest service center is my garage, a good 50 feet from the refrigerator.

My dealer's just over 20 miles away. There are a couple of other dealers about 2 hours away. As far as any other qualified repair shop, I'm not sure.

I like the way you think Dinqua! I just joined here, but it's obvious you know yer way around Trumps. (just followed a post on your site about airbox removal yesterday & it worked like a dream.) Thank you sir!
I'm just learnin' to work on my own bikes. Pretty much driven by necessity. My local dealers about 25 miles away. (Ed's service in Hyde Park) Ed's a friggin' piece of work, and not in a good way. He will not allow anything that's been customized in any way into his shop. He'll work on 'em, but you've gotta leave 'em in the parking lot. Screw that! He's 'bout 70 by now, & just the meanest, nastiest, junk friggin' yard dog mentalitied ****** you've ever seen. The man HATES everybody! 32 years ago, I bought my 1st Triumph from him - the one that started this magnificent lifelong, obsession.
I'd given him $1500 cash the day before & was back for my Bonnie with bank check in hand to pick her up. Now I'm not suggestin' any butt kissin' is in order, but ******, the ****** comes out of the shop to talk to me & acts like I crapped in his friggin' corn flakes that morning. Had I not been all of 22 years old & wantin' that 750 SO bad, I'da told him to shove his bike. I'm glad I didn't, but I still regret not tellin' the ****** off. Needless to say, I only order parts there when I can't get 'em anywhere else.
I'm ramblin' again. Next closest is NYC or Albany that I know of. Bout an hour either way but tons of traffic.
'07 Triumph America - 153 mains, 45 pilots, airbox gone, '71 650 chop, '04 America powertrain for chop being built now.

My 'local' Triumph dealers are 45 minutes north and south of where I live. So I bought my 1st new bike, a HD, for the reason that the dealer was right in town. For a brand new bike, I wanted a local service in case of anything major, whether it was warranty or not.
I do my own basic servicing, but I didn't have a garage and doing major work outside is long in my past.
Working in SC, I can travel past the dealer to the south, so that's when I decided to trade for my America.
I've now used both the above Triumph dealerships and won't be using their service departments again, if I can help it. I was not impressed with the way my selling dealer did my 600 mile service and neither dealer was helpful when I was attempting to remove the AI and get the bike running properly. The service tech at the dealer in Raleigh (2 hours away) was more helpful, but too far away to be practical. All 3 are multi brands, and each has their preferred fav brand (either BMW or Ducati). Triumphs just seem a adjunct.
Now, it's a service manual and my mate's garage from now on.

the nearest dealer is about 1/2 mile away - at most. However I've gone off them... I have a dealer in Cheltenham about 45 mins away, Swindon about 1 hour away, Taunton again about 1 hour..... but the dealer I got the 09 from is 140 miles away - about 2 1/2 hours. They're great.

240 miles, but the only time the bike has been there was when I was buy a t-shirt and looking at the new bikes. (it's 240 FUN miles though, maybe I do need to go there more often)

I'm a little over 1 mile away from my closest dealer. I used to be about 6 miles away but I just recently moved. I joked that it was to be closer to the Triumph dealer. In my limited experience with them they have been ok to deal with. I guess I am lucky. I can't believe the distances some of you guys have to go for a dealer.

The nearest dealer is about a 5 hour ride at the speed limit. Haven't been there yet, so I don't know if I'd trust them with my bike.

Mine is Freedom Cycles in Reno, NV. Where my son and I bought our bikes. Staff is great and we have never had any problems. They bend over backwards for me. Got me in for first service when I showed up thinking it was first come first serve rather than by appointment. They keep trying to get me in to ride the T-Bird. I'm afraid I'll want to add it to my one bike collection if I do. I cant afford the divorce that is sure to come if I buy one.

I am 25 miles from the one in New Orleans. I used to be approximately 200 miles from one that went out of business. My real service center is 25 feet from the computer I am typing on right now in the garage!

I have one about 30 miles north of me that I'll buy some parts from on occasion and another one that I've never been to about 60 miles south. As far as service goes.... that's what tool boxes, beer and an afternoon with your buddies is for!!

1-1/2 hour either north (to Edmonton) or south (To Calgary) but I do all my work myself. I order k&n oil filters from the local honda dealer and "v-twin" oil from ("Canadian") Crappy Tire.
