Two weeks ago I registered all my vehicles for the next two years. On September 1, the state of Florida raised the price of vehicle registration by 100%. So I was able to register everything for two years for the same price that today would have cost me for just one year.

I look at the fee increase as just another form of taxation, but without the politicians having to fear any backlash from the increase.

Actually, I saw that the license renewal fee went from $20.00 to $48.00!!!
Government WILL get the monies they need. No "going without" for them.

My "under 21" son just paid $36.60 in June.
Don't know what it will jump to next year.

Just gotta love our Florida politicians. Lowered our property taxes, then new local fees were enacted - stormwater and garbage. I've been to our local tag agency 3 times lately to get a tag for a utility trailer. Each time the line was longer than I wanted to wait. Monday was the final day to save. At 0715, the line was out the door. The local news announced at 1800 that anybody still in line at 1915 could get a waiver to come back another day (at the August rates), so I went back thinking I could wait in line a few minutes, pick up my waiver and go on about my business. Long story short, I was still there at 2220 Monday night! I renewed my DL while there, so now it's good until 2018 (should I live that long). The photo machine fouled up the card and I have to go back in for a do-over, but they promised me that when I come back, I can jump ahead - yeah, we'll see how well that works! Good part is that I picked up my waiver and now have until Sept 10 to re-tag my vehicles at the old rate. I've got 6 to do, so it should save me quite a few $$$.

BTW, you talk to some strange people when you're in line that long, but you also meet some good folk. I lined up a super deal on a condo in Daytona for next year's bike week!!!

Yes, the taxes/fees were increased, but not by anywhere near 100%.. for example, registration renewal on a motorcycle went from $10.00 to $13.50. Also, many of these fees have not changed for years, some haven't been increased since the 1960's, and all money generated is to be used for infrastructure improvement (road maintenance, new roads/bridges, etc..).

For a list of the changes, see: http://www.flhsmv.gov/MotoristFees.htm

Cheers,
Brad

For annual renewals last year I paid $46 each for my car and truck, and $25 each for my Triumph and Ducati. My motorcycle trailer was $17. Florida's had cheap registration and renewal fees for a long time. If you look at the link posted by Brad, the new fees aren't really out of line since the ones that apply to most of us here haven't changed in 20 years or more.

Wasn't it in Virginia that the governor and a lot of other pols got tossed out a few years ago because of high car tag fees? Hit everyone with a high visibility tax increase and a lot of them aren't very forgiving.

Well Larry, I'm not sure about the Virginia thing, but does the name "Gray Davis" ring a bell?

Yep, because ol' Gray, who BTW always lived "up" to his name(personality-wise that is) refused to lower the car registration fees while he was runnin' the show out here, we had a little recall movement, as you may also recall, a certain austrian movie star was swept into office with claims that he was going to lower those car fees because he was going to "find all the waste in the state budget" so the car fee could be lowered and he'd still be able to balance the budget.

Well, a few short years(and a "little" global recession)later and after all of Der Governators very own hand-picked auditors discovered that almost all of his so-called "waste" claims during his campaign were more than "a little" overblown, our "action hero" now is raising our annual car registration fees to higher levels than even Mr. Boring, I mean Gray Davis, ever had 'em!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I think Clinton was gov of Arkansas at two different times. One of the reasons he lost re-election was the increase in vehicle lic and reg fees. He came back and won four years later.

Florida doesn't have an income tax, so one would expect other gov methods of extortion to be high.

The Florida tag for my bike was $24.60 in July, but that was before the new increase. I guess it will be near $50. next year.

Yup, my birthday is in November... all the tags and license are due. I really like how the media kept this on the QT until the last few days. Also, "let's pic Sept. 1st to enact it." Why not start it the 1st of Jan.? Then it would have been equitable.... Oh well, nothing in life is fair..... No state income tax... YET.

later, Tom.

But, what do I know?

Dave sadly looks like Missouri wont be far behind, on the news today they were talking about borrowing money to pay for the Unemployment shortfall and paying for it through higher fee's elsewhere. So what they are saying, is the state runs out of money, borrows it from the U.S Government. And we get to pay it back. Would be easier to just assign one unemployed person to each citizens home for you to care for like a pet. Problem solved! Dont get me wrong, I understand being unemployed, I do have issue with me having to support them when the state has a program in place that should be doing this.

I think this is interesting, these things change from state to state. I think some of us have confused lic & reg fees with property taxes on vehicles, both of which need to be paid to renew tags. But, from a taxpayers view they are the same, cost to remain mobile.

in Florida the reason for the high cost to renew tags is the registration tax fee which is about to go up much further, not personal property taxes collected with tag renewal. Florida is trying to increase taxes any way they can it seems as there is no state income tax.

In PA we only pay sales tax at time of purchase no property tax on them after that. I think taxing your vehicle yearly is wrong, I also think property tax in general is wrong. If you own something why should you have to pay a 3rd party to be able to keep it? After all you paid for your property you shouldn't have to continue to pay rent to keep it.

I pay $18 for my bike tag and $189 for my wrecker tag. I think a car or light truck tag is between $50 and $60 but not sure , haven't paid for one in a while.

Here in Iowa we pay a 5% tax on the value of a vehicle when we buy it and an additional property tax plus a registration tax each year when we register it. That can range from less than $20 per year to several hundred depending upon the type and value of the vehicle. Motorcycles are quite cheap to register, for the time being.
