Well, apparently my Specialty Spares are to load to pass Delaware's inspection. (fyi they are 110 dbs at 3500 rpms) So, is there an easy way to quiet them down? I thought about stuffing some steel wool in there, but can't figure out a 'good' way to keep it from blowing out. I dont have the stock pipes to swap out, so thats not an option, unless someone has a set they will loan me??? Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks Wendell

There is a different baffle you can buy, it is longer from a company called Hard Kore leonics from the site had a set on his bike and it toned them down nicely. What he did was as follows: I cut the mounting tab and about an inch and a half off other end so they would sit tight between the original baffle and the end cap, that was pretty easy with a Dremel cutting wheel. I figured for $70 buck it was worth a try. They went in fairly easy and come out quickly. I have considered rapping some batting around them to further quiet my exhaust. leonics eddy

Your best bet is to buy 4 sheets of 4-stroke baffle material wrap for the baffles. Originally, they had one wrap on each baffle taped in place. You can tightly wrap two layers and wire or tape tight to slide the baffle back into the pipe. BikeBandit.com and others sell Moose Racing Fibreglass Muffler Packing for about 7.50 a sheet.
If you have never replaced the wrapping, even one new layer will make a noticeable difference. The wrapping lasts about 12,000 miles with a gradual deterioration after the first few thousand. If yours is all worn out, new packing can actually improve the power band performance of the bike giving the max. performance increase the pipes were designed for. I hope it will be enough to pass. If not, you may have to find some used stock pipes to put on for your check.

Really simple solution: go to another inspection station that doesn’t care too much about those silly little rules. If you don’t know of one, talk to someone who has a loud bike, they usually have a trusted friend they take theirs to.

That's odd cause every inspection I've done they never fire her up. I'd say if you want a simple quick fix that'll come back out just as easy. Take the steel wool approach, but use a bolt with a stand off nut. A stand off nut is a long nut threaded the entire way through, and insert the bolt/nut together and loosen to clamp inside the pipe. It'll hold long enough to pass.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions, I think I will try the standoff bolt/steel wool idea for the short term, but I guess I should re-wrap them anyway, they have 12k on them already, so sounds like they are due.

Only inspection my 04 has had on it is the one the dealer put on it in 04. My BMW still has a 1985 sticker on it, last time that one was done. I figure if I get pulled over now I saved a ton of cash, same thing with all my bikes. I never get any of them inspected even though they would pass.

Ay, Dog, what about that pesky thing required to operate a motor vehicle in PA, I think they call it, um...INSURANCE?

Man?...its been...KNOCK ON WOOD...2.5 years so far that ive been riding with no inspection sticker on the rear tag. Been followed by a few cops too. I dont like having it in the back of my mind, I just dont wanna be in the position your in. And I dont know how they do it in PA but you can get insurance and registration without proof of inspection here in NJ...and I thought Jersey was stricter than PA

{sarcasm/}As the national and state economies circle the bowl, it's great to see the states working hard at issues of dire importance, like exhaust pipes

There are three separate players when it comes to keeping a bike on the road, legally, in PA (forgetting license/permit): 1) Insurance, 2) Registration, 3) Inspection. In PA your insurance carrier has the right to deny you coverage if your vehicle is out of inspection when it’s in an accident. That’s right! No medical, accidental death and dismemberment, hospitalization, collision, comprehensive, etc. This has been fought often in the courts and the insurance underwriters often win. So, why would you want to open yourself up to a lot of different litigation, from the parties involved in the claim and your/their insurance company? Nohin’ says lovin’ like getting sued by your insurance carrier after the other carrier, in the claim against you, sues them for not insuring you (because you didn’t want to spend the thirty bucks on an inspection sticker)!

Ive never considered not being covered because I didnt have an inspection sticker. Makes sense that they'd fight it either way, but I would think they wouldnt have a case unless the accident was in relation to why the bike wouldve failed. Like if you got into an accident because you didnt have blinkers or a stoplight, with no inspection sticker, yeah I can see that. But if someone blows a stop sign and plows into me, it wont matter if my pipes were too loud or not. You have a point though.
In NJ inspection is free, so its not about saving money...I just dont want to fail if I dont have to. Ive known a lot of people without inspection stickers, but none have been in an accident.

We're cool here in BC too...well, except for Vancouver which has an 'air quality' test.

Which sound level test did they do? If they didn't use the new SAE J2825 standard you can fight it, maybe even with the AMA's help. It's worth looking into.
I'll be using this new standard this week to test my own Specialty Spares with doubled packing to see where I stand in the great scheme of volume output. I'd rather be a part of the solution than a part of the problem.

Ed, I did get in some additional baffle material, but I've been enjoying the sound of my Specialty Spares repacked like they originally were. I may wait awhile to add another layer. The bike actually runs better with the replaced packing and I'd never heard it with the BB kit and "new" pipes. Specialty Spares definitely makes a good product.

Same in OK. The Tulsa police will occasionally pull you over for loud pipes, though.

After 4+ hours in the pink cell, I decided to get my inspection done. Many years ago, but it was all the cop needed to lock me up. Bad Cop - No Donut!
Good Judge - threw out the case and sent me on my way.

Where did this happen? Florida did away with vehicle inspections back in the 1970s'.

Jacksonville, 1980/81. Fla still had inspections then. As the fingerprint Tech said; "You Pi$$ed off the Po-lice." Probably true.

Keep a set of TORS or similar for inspection, and then put the others back on.
