So I've noticed lately that when I accelerate there's a weird sound coming from the valve train. I know (think?) loose valves are more of a clicking sound. This is definitely "tinny." It runs fine otherwise. At first I thought it might be one of the cam tension springs after seeing these videos, but it only seems to happen when I accelerate, not at idle, and it's definitely more of a ting than a click. I'm also pretty sure it's not detonation, not a ping. Ideas? I can try and take my own video but that might prove difficult.

Only things I can think of in there that might make a tin can sound would be if the oil feed came loose or the cam springs. Maybe if something let go in the tensioner and found it's way up top? Those are my ideas right off. If I think of anything else I'll post it. Maybe if one of the rubbing blocks came off a cam follower? Doubt that one but I guess it's a possibility. In any case I would open up the cover and look.

Could it be an exhaust leak at the head?

That's a weird one. Apart from what Ian mentioned, what about a loose baffle in an exhaust or an exhaust leak as per mrt202. Is it possible for the noise to telescope back up to the head? Has someone tied a small tin can above your valve cover under your tank as a joke???

If the backlash gear came loose or the spring broke letting the gear just flop around that may make that kind of sound too.

The double walled exhaust head pipes can have a rattle to them. They can rattle internally on acceleration. This may be what you are hearing, I had this problem a couple years ago.

What did you do about it? I've eliminated the muffler heat shield from consideration.
