Here is a question/statement I asked Palm Beach Ducati Triumph about an ignitor they have placed at auction: Quote:
Why is this item available for sale? Was the bike totaled? And exactly what was this of off? The americas in 2007 and the speedmasters in 2005 changed over to 865 motors. It matters. How about a part number? Any limited warranty on this item? Being electrical I doubt it but as the reason for it being for sale has not been published How would you, let alone I, know if the thing was a bad unit never discarded due to oversight? Just a heads up is all as Pinwall Cycles does identify the make model year and if it was running or not. I am thinking that Pure Triumph replaced someone’s igniter and Palm Beach came across the old one when vacating the Ft Lauderdale property.
My question is really can we look up a specific ignitor part number given our specific motorsickle's serial number? How do we determine the part number on the used ignitor? (answered see below)
Bike Bandit: IGNITER, 2 CYL, 270, EVAP SERIAL NUMBER 237501 AND HIGHER 5567481-001 Enter 0-99 $564.32
IGNITION CTRL UNIT,TWIN,270 IGNITION TIMING SERIAL NUMBER 237500 AND BELOW 5567480-001 Enter 0-99 $606.93
why the two part numbers? For the 865 changeovers? But that happened two years apart. Seems that there should be another questioned asked after being asked the serial number. Like what model year was it? Or what size motor? Or is determining the correct ignitor part number something that only a dealer could answer (scary)?
Parts Micro fiche T1291100 Anyone have the changeover new number?
Ignitor itself
Aha! I see it now. 1291100.
Dangit! Speedsupplies doesn't have triumph oem listings anymore?

Why would the part number matter for different displacement motors? The firing sequence and timing stays the same, the only change between the two motors is the size of the cylinders and the cams. I can understand the desire to make sure used parts didn't come off of a bike where the igniter was faulty and the change between two different part numbers are a bit curious as well.

i agree Greg about the 865's. might be treeing the wrong coon. why are there two part numbers for ignitors? i recall when dinqua was with larkfarms? and they swapped ignitors with a like motor. the ignitor didn't work.

I suspect the different cam timing changes the ignition point and the amount of timing retard at higher RPMs. I seem to remember Dill had a difficult time when the dealer replaced his with the other model (incorrect) unit. And, my guess is that many dealers carry multiple brands and just aren't well versed in the minutia of Triumph's ignition electronics.
I too have been carried farther by a Pinwall replacement than the original stock unit managed to eek out. Still, my failed ignitor thread so far hasn't produced the kind of numbers I thought it would, only garnering enough responses to buy a single new Thunderbird outright and therefore reinforcing Triumph's don't-ask/don't-tell service methodology. Doesn't mean I have to like it but it also hasn't proven a widely know ignitor defect.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

I also didn't get as many responses as I thought I would with the broken starter gear.
I wonder if maybe they changed something in the pin configuration of the ignitor and that's why the different part numbers.

Well after receiving a reply form Palm Beach Triumph, Quote:
On Aug-25-09 at 18:06:01 PDT, seller added the following information:
Because there are so many questions about this CDI ,HERE WE GO:
Part # T1292060 CDI for sell (Check your Vin at the bottom of the chart) Here is a copy of the parts manual for the Speedmaster

There are more but these seem to be the pertainate part numbers. how does one say omg? you have got to be kidding me! So what are the associated VIN numbers?
