Okay, I'm almost done. I just compressed the rivet link and I'm wondering how I tell if it's compressed enough. How hard do I reef on the rivet tool? I took some pictures here, but here are the two applicable photos (ignore the Scottoiler tubes):

It looks good. You don't want the chain to bind or flatten out the o-rings too much. Give it a quick messure and if your within a couple of thousands of the original links you should be there.

Update: after calling FastEddy and re-reading the instructions, I found out that I need to use the flare head and flare the ends out. Here's what that looks like, assuming I did it enough:

I used a clip style link and I no longer advise the use of one on an X ring or O ring chain. In order to compress the link enough to get the clip on it forced out the O ring and even then I had a tough time getting the clip to seat in the little groove. I am going to buy a rivet tool and change the clip link out for the rivet type. I would still use the clip on the std chains and have been riding with the clip link on my X ring for now but I want the seal to do it's job and it isn't the way it is now.

All I see are little boxes with red Xs. Quote:

The ones I've done come with spacers to keep that from happening.

I used the spacers that came with the chain and just tightened it up till the tool snapped off and voila no more guessing!

I'm getting ready to change my chain again also. This will be my 3rd total and 2nd EK chain. I don't know about other brands, but the EK's come with spacers for installation. Crank on the rivet 'shrooming tool till just before it breaks and you should be good to go...

Well, I rode it to my monthly poker game tonight and so far, so good.
Oh, and Ian, this thread has nothing to do with clip-on chain links. But thanks for your input nonetheless.

I know John just thought the info fit here and would be useful to those thinking of that route.
