Chuckles,
You can still ride without your dash, just unplug the idiot light cluster. I hope you know where neutral is.
And it really cant fit too flush cause it'll rub the paint. You could maybe get the fit tolerance a little closer, but touching wouldnt be good.
One of the earlier mods I have not seen or heard of in a while, was to take a strip of Door Edge Guard, usually black vinyl , or rubber, and available at WalMart or any parts store for about $3.00/pair, trim it to length, and fit it around the bottom edge of the dash console. It takes up some of that gap, looks natural, like it belongs there, and after 5 years of hard riding, my original mod is holding up great. And it's cheap!

Custom or accessory, right now it's all just idle speculation.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it come to fruition, even though I'm shaving my tank.

It would be nice to have the tach at a slightly better viewing angle. Perhaps have the upper lip of the opening raised a bit to angle it and see it much better.

Oh? And what is "my tank" a euphemism for in your world?

This would be pretty cool. I certainly appreciate you looking into this. I would buy one if the price was right.
Good Luck,

I want to get rid of my stock dash panel & tach and replace it with a piece of brushed aluminum sheet with the idiot lights & all the switches from the hand controls surrounding a Monza cap. But hey, that's just me.<g>

Brushed aluminium sounds real nice.

OK, got my extra console in the mail... haven't look at innards in a while. Replacement I make if stamped sheet metal will definitely have to simplify the shape. I'll also check on casting, but not likely.
By the way, anyone know any specific purpose for the two different rubber-filled openings for switches/buttons/lights? My dealer didn't know of any specific option to install there. I have a signal light controller addon (running lights, auto-off) with a switch I will try to use one of those for... but why were they put there to begin with?
I'll probably leave them out in my new console version. I think the new design for manufacturing "ease" will be more "sleek" and smooth without all the raised edges around each opening, added lips and plateaus removed as much as possible (except mounting screw holes).

If I remember right one of the holes was for the knob to set the clock that fits in the tach hole and the other was for a led for the alarm?

That makes sense - I put a Tach (never seen anyone put a clock there...). I'll let you guys know if the running light mod switch works well with it (and will research other posts, and ask Fast Eddy where I bought it.... duh).

Yep, alarm LED on the left, clock controls on the right. I've got my hazard light switch in the alarm led position, and my running light switch in the clock position (with the fitting kit made by SRS). When I put an alarm in it I ended up needing to drill another hole in the middle of the console for the LED.

And if we're making changes like that, I agree with moving the lights, at least maybe the Oil and Turn Signal lights, to above the tach where they'd be easier to notice.

I also would be interested. Say up to about $200 for either a brushed stainless option or a chromed option.

The one you have now can be painted, but I'd recommend getting a spare and working on that one. Keep the better of the two as-is, just in case.
