The 412's seem lose on the mounting posts. And they don't have rubber bushings like the stock ones do. Am I missing something?

To clarify... There are rubber bushings mounted in the shocks. Didn't realize till I fitted them. It's a harder rubber and more integrated into the shocks than the stock ones. The play is only about 1mm or so, where the stock has a tight fitting metal sleeve inside the rubber. I think I'm good.

the 412 should have them too if there new ..it should have a bag with different size metal sleeves to pick from if not take the ones out of the old shocks and use them..

No slop allowed. They should be nice and snug, to the point where you might need to persuade them a bit to go on/off.
You should have a bag of sleeves. If not, they forgot them. I have a bunch here that I got with my newer 440s if you need them.

None of the included sleeves fit on the posts. The stock sleeves are too big tofit inside the 412's. hmmm.

Gonna try Pirsig's Zen & moto maint trick and cut a shim out of an aluminum can. Its the only readily available material thin enough to fit. Good idea, bad idea?

The shim kit from Progressive should have the correct adapter. If not, wait till Monday and call to get the correct fit. No play allowed.

OK. The 412's I received are for HDs according to the instruction sheet. Does anyone know these well enough to tell me whether the shocks themselves are different, or are the differences limited to the washer kits that go with them.

They will most likely be too stiff if they were made for an HD.
I went through this on Karens bike. Got a great deal on a aset of 412s...wound up calling Progressive and the tech said it would feel like I had no suspension cause the shocks were for an FX?????. that bike was heavier so the spring rate was much stiffer.

Z's right on. Any full size HD is going to weigh twice what ours do at the rear and you're going to feel like you're riding on struts, heck even the lowly 883 Sporty is a 100 lbs heavier at 600 lbs.

If you order the correct 412's for the America, you'll have a choice of spring weights....standard and heavy duty....according to your personal weight, solo/passenger, luggage. Choose wisely cause you could make the wrong choice and it'll cost you more to correct the problem. Don't ask me how I know! If I could do my choice over, I'd go with the 440's, or probably better yet, the Hagon Nitro's. Ask Staffo!

I have the 412 heavy duty on mine, and I weigh between 205-210, and when I ride solo they are a bit stiff, but it's a good solid feel. Riding 2-up is nice and smooth, no more bottoming out, handles great. I just wish the 440 came in HD, I would have considered those.

I have the 412HD's on my America. They ship with a small bag of bushings. I believe I used the largest one in the bad for a snug fit. These are really good for single rider or two up. I'm 230 and well my wife pushes it to over 400 and still no bottoming out of shock. I definitly needed the Heavy Duty 412's. Love em. Wayne

To cover most of the questions. YES the right ones have a small bushing that comes with it.

if you weigh 230 pounds or more you should get the Heavy Duty model.

If load of you and Passenger and gear weigh 460 pounds 50% of the time, you need the heavy duty.

The part number for the 412 for the America is: 412-4253C for the standard duty and 412-4252C for the Heavy Duty.

this is for the 12.5 stock length shocks, shorter ones are available.

I do have inside information on this and it is a bit accurate.

PS, I prefer selling the shocks, but would rather see you get the right ones, so don't hesitate to ask. I won't steer you wrong, even if you buy elsewhere.
