(the following sad news is brought to you by Dwight using Bedouin's login as we're traveling through Europe at this time)

Just received a call from Derek's wife Linda who so thoughtfully took the time during her ordeal to notify me of Derek's passing which involved an accident while riding one of his motorcycles near his home in Tucson AZ. Many of you who have been a member of BA.com for many years knew Derek, and I'm sure, just as I, will miss his insightful postings at this website.

Derek and Linda had become close friends to my wife Judie and myself since the time of the first Southwest Triumph Fest rally in Prescott AZ in 2007. Both took it upon themselves to become such an integral part of this rally that their presence was sorely missed during this year's rally which unfortunately conflicted with their plans during this past May.

But, beyond that I would like to add that I always found Derek's sense of understated humor a delight. He will be greatly missed.

(as stated above, at present, Thanassis and I are attending the EuroRally in Poland, and all the attendees at the rally were shocked and saddened to have heard this sad news, as many of them fondly remember Derek from his involvement at this website, and all would like to send their condolences to all his many friends and his family)

Bedouin. Blessed are those eyes that have seen more roads than any man! (Homer).

Oh, he will be missed

It was such a joy at the SWTF being around those two.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NO! NO! NO! !@#$%!!!

Derek and I didn't really get along. He thought I should act more respectable as a moderator and set a better example. Still he was a stand up guy and this saddens me greatly.

This is horrible news.
I met Derek and Linda in '05 on my first trip to the US and again last year at Dwight's.
A great guy and a sad loss.
Wendy and I send our love, thoughts and best wishes to Linda, their families and friends.

I only knew SalMagie as a name on the forums I was not personally aquianted with him but his loss is saddening as I do tend view a lot of the members on here as friends whom I have yet to meet. His passing saddens me as does the loss of any of my fellow online friends.

Possibly one of the more technical guys could set up a small on line e-card sort of thing that could be passed to his wife just to let her know how well respected her husband was by people from all over the world who all share a slender bond on electronic highway as well as the physical highway.

RIP mate ride easy. Peace & Respect Kid.

I also got a phone call from Linda yesterday - needless to say I was in shock.

I met Derek in 2003 or 4 I think - the summer that Benztech (for those of you old timers who remember) was on his round the country ride. There were many from here who offered Ben a stopping point on his journey, including me. Derek came up from Tucson and rode to the Grand Canyon with us. That adventure was my first taste of what great people are on the BA.com board. And I met Linda on a ride down in Tucson sometime after that. Then of course at the SWTF.

The accident is still being investigated I guess. The paper said that Derek failed to yield to an oncoming car while making a left turn. However, the friend he was on his way to meet - to talk about working on the Speedmaster bigbore install no less - apparently went to the scene shortly after and said Derek wouldn't have been turning at that point, and may have been trying to avoid another car and then was struck. Unfortunately no one was with him to witness what happened.

My first instinctive thought was - THIS SUCKS - why my friend?
We all know the risks of riding, and I know that Derek enjoyed his motorcycles despite that.

Linda told me there were up here last weekend for the "Too Broke for Sturgis" rally at Morman Lake - it was an unplanned extra jaunt on their trip to Nevada and Utah since they had the time. I am really glad they had that time and ride together. I'm just sorry I didn't get to see them then.

He will be greatly missed and I hope he is in a better place. Rest in peace my friend.

Derek was indeed a real stand-up guy who will be sorely missed. I had the opportunity of riding with Derek a number of times, most recently up Mount Lemmon here in Tucson. He was always fun to be with, and his knowledge of motorcycles was outstanding.

There will be a memorial gathering for Derek on Wednesday, August 5, starting at 5pm. Location is the Territorial Bar at 3727 S. Palo Verde Road in Tucson. We're hoping to get a decent turnout from some of the local Triumph riders.

Sad news indeed. The Tucson area has lost a good one. Derek loved to ride and I believe truly lived to ride.

Then at least he died doing what he loved, little comfort for those left behind I know but maybe some.

Yes. I still do not see why news reports need to always state. "he was not wearing a helmet"

Ultimately its just not relevant.

Derek helped me with my initial mods to my now gone Speedie back in March of 2006. He truly loved motorcycles and all things biker.
You could hear the enthusiasim in his voice and see the animation in his eyes when he spoke.

It seems ironic.

You never like to hear "the news" It happens it's inherent to what we all do.
After my exploits this spring it makes you think really long about keeping it up. My wife and family are dead set against it. we'll see.
Ride in thoughts of others my freind. Condolances to the rest of his family who now have to adjust.....
