Not that I've ever heard of. It will start sputtering and backfiring a bit as it runs out, that's the sign to switch to reserve. Also keep your eye on the odometer, anything past 140 and you need to be ready.
When I first owned the bike, it would catch me off guard (maybe the popping was less with stock pipes?). Once, I ran out pulling away from a busy intersection. But after a few months of riding, I became alert to the signs and that hasn't happened since.

Of course the new, fuel injected bikes would have a "low fuel" light as there is no reserve. At least, I would assume as much.

You are right. No tap, no reserve. And go guarantee how much fuel is left when the fuel light is on either. The reserve is much more reliable.

Gina 03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel... 06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel... 09 America - It's very blue....

I don't and have never had an EFI bike but I would have to agree Gina. I would rather trust a reserve switch rather than a light/electronic indicator.

Now I gotta know - why do most if not all FI bikes have no petcock with a reserve function ?

Just ponderin' , rainy day in Georgia .

Yup, when you run outta gas then ya know all ya got is reserve. To be honest I never use it because I pay attention to the odometer. Fill 'er up and set 'er back to zero. Still comforting to know reserve is there though.

I also like the reserve switch system. I reset my odometer with every fill up but mileage may vary a lot depending on my riding. When I run out I look at the odometer and always get gas within 20 miles.

My bike's decel popping increases when near end of reserve. I figure the bike leans out a bit without the gravity pressure. When that happens, I know it's not far away. Most of the time I run it out and switch before buying gas.

Its probably got to do with FI needing a pump drawing the fuel consistantly, compared to whatevers dumping down the bottom petcock by gravity.

Dont let them get to you...Theyve all accepted the burden of counting miles. If the bike came with a fuel gauge you wouldnt see anyone taking it off...haha

Most guys still have their neutral lights, if you get my drift

I know petty much how many miles I get to a tank of gas.
Every time I fill the tank, I set the trip odometer to 0.
Then it's a matter of drive til empty. As I see the trip odometer get close to my maximum mileage prior to flipping to reserve I know it's time to stop for gas.
just my $.02

That old school sight gauge FJ dug up is pretty cool. Nothing like keeping it simple.

Close enough.
FI systems use fuel under high pressure with an electric pump in the tank to maintain the pressure.

If you run it dry, serious (expensive) damage can result.

A mechanical switch to reserve when it gets low and quits (and it would quit, no sputter, no warning, just quit. Real bad if you're in a situation where you need to goose it) just wouldn't cut it.
